What Is The Best Way To Sell A Niche Site? (Best Practice / Good Websites & Resources Etc)

Hi guys, I wonder if you can help me?

I'm considering selling a niche site I've been building up over the last 6 months - my wife and I recently had a baby and our finances are in a bad place since she left work. We've limped along for a few months, but it's time to reshape our finances and I'm looking for solutions!

I've had several blogs in the past, but this is my first niche site and I feel a bit out of my depth and don't know where to start with regard to selling it. So before taking this process any further I thought I'd ask for some advice from those of you who are much more experienced in Internet Business than I am.

Is there a 'go to' website where such transactions take place? Are there any best practices or useful resources or advice you can highlight?

My site gets around 6,000 unique visitors a month and is in a very targeted niche aimed at young professionals. I appreciate this is a very ambiguous question to ask and there are many factors to consider, but how much would the site be worth, roughly, do you think?

Thank you so much for your help!
Mike

How much does the site earn per month? You have nice traffic figures, but without proven income you're going to be hard pressed to sell it for any decent amount of money.

Flippa.com is where you're going to want to start...

I would suggest that you look at Flippa, but also if your niche site is ranking well I would consider putting up a notice to the competition on it.

Put a simple banner on your site saying for sale etc and if it is ranking well in one of the top spots, you can be sure the competiton is watching it and may be interested. It can be a great way to sell because the competition wants to buy the site more then anyone else and also you know that the site should be in good hands when you sell it (which I always find nice anyway!).

Another vote for Flippa, fantastic! The site currently earns around £200 GBP per month, but it could easily earn £350+ with just a few tweaks that I haven't got round to yet. (That's solely from selling content, there is no advertising on there of any kind.)

Great idea Connor, thank you! I would never have thought of selling to my competition. I think I may approach them directly and see what offer they're prepared to make.

        Mikey,

Connor is right, except that I wouldn't just put a banner on my site.

I would do a Google search on my main keywords (for the site) and then contact the top 25 or 50 web site owners that are at the top of the search results for your keywords. Often these "competitors" are doing well and might like to buy your site for the traffic and the email subscribers.

        Good luck to you,

        Steve

In all seriousness there may be a few niches that are still untouched, but I wouldn't be surprised if that market became efficient fairly quickly, so competition is almost a guarantee. Areas that may not have much competition may not be very profitable our sellable niches. And I may very well be wrong about niches with no competition left. I hope I am and that you fill it, better than I could have done.

Yes income proof always speed up sales on Flippa but then is worth a try cause who knows, you may be lucky to run across a buyer that might be interested in your website with all the organic traffic that your site is already getting.

If your site has got a good, focused domain name, consider listing it on Sedo.com.

Here, people first look at the domain name, but if it's offered with an established website that's making regular money each month and has a clear potential to be developed further, the whole package could sell well on Sedo. This is a site where really high dollar sales take place.

6000 unique visitors are very respectable. Have you considered offering banner ads on your site?
A good source of side income. Just looking for forums, blogs or offers relating to your niche and send them a note offering to put their website or products on your site.

A $50 a month banner with about 3-4 banners is still good additional fix income.
