I don't know if I want to be your friend!

I honestly don't. Here's why...

Every day I get emails from one social networking site or another saying something like:

"John Doe wants to be your friend and invites you to join [insert site name]. Click here to join"

...or some such.

Most of the time, I've never heard of the person making the request. Of course, that doesn't mean they don't know me. After 10 years online I can't remember everyone's name.

To be honest, there's no way I'll be clicking the link in that email because it could just as easily be some kind of spammy/virus thing. Rule #1 to avoid viruses - don't click links in emails from people you don't know.

So sorry if you thought I didn't want to keep up with you - it's nothing personal.

Cheers,

Neil

Ditto. I only accept invites from people I know personally. Like what you said, the person sending the invite may also be sending a virus. And I definitely don't want the trouble.

I get friend requests here at the WF (not sure why anyone would want to be my friend?) but I usually accept.

The thing is, I have no idea what to do with these friends. Am I supposed to be communicating with them in some special way? Maybe taking them out to lunch? I see them when I open my CP but I'm not really sure what being a friend means..

    Hey Guys

You're making it look like I came on here fishing for new friends.

But if you want to be my friend - that's cool - you can never have too many

I'm suddenly getting Twitter friend requests from what appear to be oil lobbyists.

Cashcow, lunch would be fine, are you anywhere near MN?

What I don't get is why people on Facebook ask if I will be their
friend, but not give me access to their profile to make that decision.

If I can see that we have things in common, then maybe.

The good news is at least on FB you can also delete bad friends,
which I just did to a well known IM'er that thought I needed him
to use the "F" word on my wall and in my email.

No, but that still doesn't mean I'm going to click links in unsolicited emails I receive from unknown senders.

This is what I like about the WF so much. The emphasis is put on helping others or being helped. That is community and that is usually how friends are made. The label of Friend, just to have the privilege to read someone's advertisement instead of a normal request is really a turn off! The little bit of friendly banter I find on this and many other posts is what I would consider "Friendship In Action"... Dear Cash Cow, "Happy Mothers Day"!

And, In case there is another female behind the names or numbers, Happy Mothers Day to you too!

Neil, I don't blame you for feeling skeptical if you get invites from John Doe. Where I live that is usually an unidentified corpse.

By the way I sent you a friend request to keep you friendly and to prove that I am alive and well.

    God bless

      Neil,

I have a folder with hundreds of those requests from people at sites I've never signed up for. I'm with you... Even if it wasn't mildly risky to start clicking on these unexpected links, I'm not going to join every site someone I don't know wants to promote.

Hell, I feel weird accepting friend invites from people I barely know HERE, much less some random stranger at WhoseItsFaceSpace.com

It's cool on Twitter, where there's no implied connection. Gets iffy on Facebook, and downright strange on LinkedIn, where there's supposed to be some professional association. You get them from people who might be subscribers, but you don't even know that much. Just "Join my network on LinkedIn."

      Why? Who ARE you?
