Are people using some type of automated process to find good ones, or is it best to just try and think of ideas and manually check for them?

There are some websites that suggest domain names based on keywords, such as

Domain Search
https://www.name.com/domain/search

and to find expired and expiring domains,
Available domain suggestions,expired and expiring domain name, whois lookup | DomainsBot

  Yes, there are ways to automate the finding of good domains. A guy named Gene Pimentel here on the Warrior Forum specializes in domaining and will get you going.
