What's your take and suggestion on email spam score in 2013?

And what is the main causes that will have my emails to be marked as spam ( too many image, certain links, no unsubscribe button and etc.. )?

Is there any definite guide that you recommend on this topic?

Thank you so much!

    no unsubscribe button
No unsubscribe button certainly leads for message to be marked as spam.

In addition to an unsubscribe button you want an email footer similar to what I use:

Your email address [emailaddress] was subscribed to our list from IP Address [IP address] on [date] from this web page [url of signup page]

ISPs are increasingly looking for stuff like this so make sure it's there. Also be sure to send all emails as multipart. I still scratch my head as to why so many marketers are using text-only. Not only did my conversion rates explode when I made the move to HTML email but my deliverability and sender scores went up too.

Also, using HTML version only without the text version.

Would you mind explain this more clearly, or direct me to related source? Because I often receive email from internet marketer as text version, it doesn't seem to be a problem, but I am a novice so I am probably wrong. Thank you and appreciated!

What causes messages to be marked as spam?

Do you mean by the subscribers? If so - that's an easy answer...

They don't know who you are and/or have no relationship with you...

Now, why do the ESP's mark it as spam - well - there are 1,000 + variable there, some of which were mentioned above.

The biggest mistake I see most email marketers make is sending from a "free email address" like gmail or yahoo. You should always send from a domain you own - ie you@yourdomain.com.

    Cheers,

Thank you Coby, that is very helpful, and is there any recommended source on spam score that you'd recommend?

      Thank you!

    Nice tips!
    I've got something to add:

    - try to limit the frequency of mailings.
    - thoroughly choose your content - try to engage the reader with interesting and informative messages. Make the reader look forward to your email!

    - as it's been already said - include a working mechanism for recipients to easily remove themselves from your mailing list.
    - ensure that your messages are sent to the right demographic groups.

-use personalization features to include your subscriber’s name or other pertinent information.

-make sure the “From” address for your messages is an honest, working email address.

I sometimes mail three times a day.

Few people on my lists have complained about that, probably because they want to hear what I have to say.

And given my experience as an email marketer, I'd have to say that the "frequency of mailing" is only a consideration for the reader. If the readers hate your emails, they will flag you as spam. If the reader loves your emails, they will open and read what you send.

I have mailed my primary list 250 times in the last 9 months, and I have only received a grand total of 24 complaints from my list on all of my mailings.

That is an average of one complaint for every ten emails, even though each email goes to thousands of readers.

Great results! But I guess that from the very beginning of implementing e-mail marketing it's too much. First you need to gain right audience which will be ready to receive such great amount of information from you. And it's better not to shock them with multiple mails from the start.
