How Do You Test The Effectiveness Of Your Sales Letters/Videos

I'm wondering, Exactly how do you know what works and what doesn't.

Lets say you create a sales page and you're getting a few sales -- But you know you could do better.

How would you know what to change?

My guess is to just change one piece at a time and record the response -- Would I be right by this?

No, don't change it a little at a time.

Create a Google Analytics account, and set up split-testing and Test them SIMULTANEOUSLY.

If you test at different times you will get inaccurate results.

You will need 2 versions of the same page, but only change ONE factor about the page so you will know what is causing the improvements or DEprovements.

If you need more info, Just Google (Split testing with Google Analytics)

    Hope this helps!

For starters, you could always hire a couple of professional copywriters to critique your sales page.

If the changes they suggest (if any) fall in live with what you thought, and more importantly, fall inline with one another, then those changes are probably worth implementing from the off set.

Beyond that, the only way to really know is to test. You can split test elements of your sales page such as headlines or the whole page itself if you want to.

Remember though, testing will only be accurate with reasonably amounts of traffic all of the same quality.

    First things first...

You need to make sure your copy is the best it can be - before you test it.

Put it up on the copywriting forum and get some feedback or pay someone you're referred to and get a proper critique.

Once you're sure the copy is where it REALLY needs to be for testing, drive your traffic on something like adwords or small lists (solo ad) and see what kind of conversions you get.

    Obviously...

Your conversions will vary greatly - depending on the traffic - but if it's good copy, it should convert decently on cold clicks.

If it doesn't convert at all...

Start by changing up your headline.

    That's almost always step one.

Make small changes - so you know what's working.

Whenever testing anything, it's important to only test one thing at a time...sure you could try split testing with analytics and get all professional...but my instinct tells me that most beginners aren't going to be able to pull that off.

Start with your headline...make another version and test it. Compare it to your original and go from there.

I'd recommend that you test several different sales letters at the same time. The reason being that at different times of the year/month, people's likelihood of buying varies greatly.

Additionally you want to test like for like in terms of traffic sources. I.e. You don't one sales letter getting relatively more adwords traffic, another one getting relatively more solo ad traffic, a third getting relatively more organic traffic, etc.. Different traffic sources tend to attract different types of people, with different likelihood of response, so if f you don't test like for like it will ruin your results.

In terms if variations, i would design a few completely different letters, test them and find the best approach to pitching That is your starting point, or base line, for your real tests.

In the real test each variation would contain only 1 change from the base line letter. So first variation would try a different headline, the second a different guarantee, etc. When you find the best variation, that becomes the new base Lnr for the next series of tests (in which you will test variations on this new baseline). Then just repeat this process again and again. Eventually you will end up with a killer sales letter.

Here is how I would collect the Data from each split test:
