Creating a sense of urgency with a downloadable product

Looked around the forums, but couldn't find a clear answer to this...suggestions are very welcome!

I have a downloadable product, and want to create a sense of urgency for people to buy it. I HATE, (loathe, despise, etc) the following urgency tactics:

1) cheesy timers that say the offer expires in 5, 4, 3, 2 minutes.
2) limited supplies, (duh, it's downloadable. I'd like to think my audience is smarter than that)
3) the price goes up in 1, 2, 3, etc minutes
4) I'm taking it all offline at midnight tonight!

So does anyone have any suggestions on how I could create urgency and not feel like a sleazy IM-salesman?

One thing that I was thinking is saying I'm releasing a limited number of programs each month. The program is a 2-hour video, so bandwidth is a realistic concern, but explaining that may be too technical...

    You could use the urgency tactics (with variations) you mentioned above except actually follow through with the threats to remove the offer or raise the price. The only thing that makes people hate those tactics is that the people who use them don't actually intend to follow through.

    Hope all is well. Good for you showing ethics!

    Take a few moments to set up a game plan about "sense of urgency." For instance what are ways your past, current, and future customers would understand and believe that you are telling the truth.

    Would you be okay with:
    Limiting the total sales of an item
    Limiting the amount of copies that get the introductory price
    If it is a Warrior offer letting people know that you sold 7 of the 15 at the one time price and the next 15 will be ***** dollars higher
    Giving a bonus for the first *** people that buy

    If any of those are okay with you, then creating urgency has been accomplished and you did nothing underhanded.

    One I've used frequently is that you are trying to get testimonials. Once you have 7, 10, or however many you feel comfortable with, testimonials, you will raise the price back to your "normal" price.

    I know this may be against what everyone else here says, but it has worked for me: assuming you are building a list, you may want to forgo the sense of urgency in your "thanks for signing up" page.

    Assuming you're interested in building a good relationship with your list, you may want to save that silver bullet for a special sale you will conduct at some point. Then, you actually can have a sense of urgency with a solid date that will expire. It will be 10 times more effective this way. Just be sure you include a reason why.
