How Do I Become a VA?

Hey,

So I have been a member on this forum for a while now, i've spent a lot of time working online and trying various different MMO strategies. Currently I am building a business but it will be sometime before I see any profits from my efforts.

Over the years that I have been a member here the one thing I have noticed is that no one ever really touches on how to become a VA.

Why is that?

Becoming a VA is something I am really looking into right now because it would allow me a source of seed income (money to reinvest) while giving me the flexibility to continue my studies (I am currently in my last year at University) and the freedom to work from any location with an internet connection.

The problem is that I don't really know where to find employers. There are websites like elance but I have never had nothing but bad luck with the employers that I have worked with.

Where else can I search for VA positions to apply to? The Wanted section on WF does not have any listed but I really find it hard to believe that, out of the thousands of business owners in this community, no one is currently looking to hire someone to manage the day to day of their business so that they can focus on the big ideas that will allow them to continue growing their business.

Any ideas on how I can start my search?

Any advice or insight from other's that have walked this path is greatly appreciated

Cheers,
Gregg

Gregg, you're way overthinking this. You have skills to offer. There are thousands of marketers right here who need someone to help. Advertise what you have to offer. Find one client. Provide exceptional service, and ask them for referrals. Done. Rinse and repeat.

Yeah you are probably right in that regard haha. I do tend to over think things massively at times. I was looking for more of a steady VA position rather than freelancing though. Freelancing is great and I have done it with great success in the past but it requires a lot of time spent developing yourself as a business. Time which I would much rather spend developing my actual business model.

I am hiring VA's that are Wordpress and Graphic Design Savvy. However your profile says New York, NY but I can tell you first hand that us New Yorkers would never say "at University" we would say "in college" .... This makes me feel suspicious about you, why did you feel the need to lie about your location? Maybe you're not lying and your a foreign student studying in NY?

Anyway, VA jobs, odesk, elance, onlinejobs.ph try these out...

Haha to be completely honest with you I have spent the last half of a year on n exchange program in Australia. I got very used to calling it "Uni" because "college" means something else.

Force of habit but I can assure you that I am from New York.

I'll send you a PM in regards to your hiring.

Thanks for the tip. Will definitely be looking into oDesk.

University is something else than college, a level above it. Just saying...

I think everyone knows the difference between a university and a college, but he's talking about something else. In NY, we don't say, "at University." That's how foreigners phrase it. Like how Americans say, going "on vacation," vs people from other countries saying they're going "on holiday."

To everyone still discussing the fact that i said "at University" rather than college...I have already explained that I spent the last 5 months saying "at Uni" while studying abroad in Australia. I just recently got back to the states so it has become kind of a habit.

I'm not sure why any of this was something to be discussed in the first place as it has literally NOTHING to do with the OP.

          To DubDub

There are many VA positions that are targeted towards native english speakers. To generalize the entire field as being "for people living in developing nations" seems a bit ignorant but you are entitled to your own opinion on the subject.

          To Vinny

Cheers for the link buddy. Will check it out

Thank you for all of the advice from those who offered it. To the rest, well...thanks for the conversation

There's also the options of applying to companies that have a team of VAs to meet their clients needs.

Companies like: Zirtual, Fancy Hands, and Red Butler.

There are plenty of virtual secretaries over on FIVERR, but it is hard to compete on price. Well, up front you should explain what your rate is. For example, 15 minutes per gig.

That's the problem I see with doing VA work. Most VA work is offshored these days. Foreign VA's will work 40 hours a week for only $300-$500/MONTH. That's why most companies don't even hire secretaries anymore; they can get an entire month (or more) of full-time work from a foreign VA for the cost of only one week of hiring an on-site secretary.

The money just isn't there. You'd be better off doing manual labor gigs on Craigslist. Loading boxes on and off trucks generally pays about $10.00/hour.

Because VA work is for people who live in developing nations. Do you as an American really want to work for $2 a day?

You should try Hire Freelancers & Find Freelance Jobs Online - Freelancer.com

I would just browse available projects there, (there's 1000's) when you see projects posted that require your skill set, just bid those jobs...

If you spend an hour or 2 a day bidding jobs on freelancer, you should be able to close a few...
