Wordpress ping update urls

It's been a few years since I had a WP hosted blog on my domain and I got a quick question:

Back in the day of WP 2.3 or older we used to be able to manually add a long list of ping sites to the WP dashboard for our blogs.

It slowed down posting but was effective in blasting our RSS feed all over the net.

I still see this:

is it still kosher to add a bazillion ping urls or is that deprecated?

I mean some ping sites are kinda like aggregators, you ping a big one and it pings a dozen or more lessor ping urls.

Is it good practice to load that space up with every ping site we can find or is that now frowned on?

    Personally, I ping about 25+ sites every post..
    Last I heard, CB ebooks like the bloggers pay check were still promoting the practice.

    Lots of people still promote lots of things that don't work like they used to, if they ever did.

    Ping blasts can get your blog 'blacklisted' (for lack of a better term) because the major ping services ping the minor ones, and if you ping multiple majors...you get the picture. You get a dozen majors pinging a minor every time you post and they'll shut you off.

    If you want to reach the most services with as little overlap as possible, you're going to have to do your homework - visit all the major sites, see who they ping, and try not to duplicate in the list.

    I know the devil's in the details, but I never thought it was worth the effort to do all that research and set up a gigantic ping list. If you DO decide to ping a bazillion sites, there's a plugin (can't remember what it's called, sorry) that moves the pinging to the tail end of the post process so you don't lose a post any more if the pinger times out.

    I ping around 50+ sites for each post.

    Hi! Here's the list I use. It's the most updated info I could find.

    The gist of it is, don't use a ping list with several sources pinging the same places. Sounds smart to me.
