I've been doing quite well as a freelance writer over the past few years, but I'm looking to branch out a little more to create additional streams of income.

I've narrowed down my list of options to choose from (see survey).

Once the niche is picked I'll put up a (wordpress) site and start posting 1-2 posts per day. I'll also start working on an informational eBook to sell for $7 as well as a free report to give away to get people on a list.

Depending on the niche I'll look at other revenue options as well. None of the revenue generating items will be much of a concern for at least a couple months though.

My goal is to create an authority site which I can run for many years to come.

So, my question is...Which one do you believe will be the most profitable for me long term?

I'm interested enough in each of the niches to be able to produce high-quality content for my visitors.

Here are the options I've come up with:
Make Money From Home (including IM)
Diet/Health (special focus on Paleo & Primal lifestyle)
Pet Niche - Family pets including dogs, cats, reptiles, bunnies, ect.
Religious Niche - A focus on Catholicism
Personal Finance - debt reduction, investing, saving, ect
Other - (explain below)

Thanks!

All of those are "MARKETS" not niches for example:

    Market = diet/health
Niche = womans natural weight loss or strength building for men

When you are trying to decide to promote something but yourself in the buyers shoes ... why would you go online vs to the store.
    Most people buy online for:
    -Convenience
-Embarrassed to ask someone face to face
    -Cheaper

So choose one of these avenues ... if you are going to target the "cheaper" seekers ... find the same product at a different cost and put in front of the viewer. This could be anything (Amazon is great for this)

To Embarrassed - People in debt have no idea how to get out of debt and typically have no idea what any of the jargon means ... so they may go online to find answers and questions but are you going to pay for something you dont know about??? .... In this scenario I would try to produce leads for commissions vs sales

Convenience - These are people who are extremely busy and dont have time or dont want to go buy it at the store ... these people are normally looking for fast shipping.

Moral of the story: dont pick a product ... determine your user and let them tell you what to offer them

    Hope this was helpful

Why o I say other is because looking at your choices I believe you can merger them all together and start a unique site making money from home with IM.

Then with your religious conviction focus on personal finance, which saves you money on working out the best diet/health for the Paleo & Primal lifestyle for human and animal scene............then you're cracked mate!!!

Good Luck and I am anxious to see & read what you come up with in the future!

Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it! Once I choose from these markets I'll be developing a marketing strategy to target the potential visitors properly. Determining the users and offering them what they want, they way they want it will be an important part of that process.

For now, however, I'm just looking to find the right market to focus on. I guess I was using the wrong terms before. I'm looking for a larger market to target and make an authority site on. From there I can (hopefully) use categories, ect to target the smaller niches within that market as well. I'm thinking very long term here, I don't want a micro-niche blog with 10 pages.

It seems like trying to include all the subjects into one site would be too much, and not attract actual 'buyers'. It might end up more like a personal blog than something used to actually make money. Or am I looking at this wrong?

I always encourage people to go with what motivates them the most. The reason most people are on the warrior forum is because they are motivated to make money online. That's why I started marketing online a few years ago.

So the natural assumption is that there are others like you and you have an immediate connection with them.

So in a roundabout way, that's my suggestion to go with MMO. But obviously, you have to commit and narrow down to a couple focuses/approaches to really make anything work.

This is just my personal opinion, so take it for what it's worth ...

There are too many people in the "make money" niche who are teaching others how to make money when they themselves don't have anything to teach other than what they have read from others. They have never made any significant income online but they figure from personal experience that others are struggling just like they are so this must be a niche full of hungry buyers.

Of course, they are correct that there are a lot of hungry buyers. Maybe the biggest reason that this audience is perpetually hungry is because they take advice from marketers that have no clue how to satisfy the hunger!

I would say, find a niche that you are passionate about and drill as deep as you can to a spot that you can carve out - a place where you can position yourself and your business - that gets you excited and allows you to use your expertise in helping others.

      You mentioned ...
"I've been doing quite well as a freelance writer over the past few years"
Why not let that success lead you into similar successes in slightly different but related areas? I like the approach that you go as deep and specific in a niche as you can and then you branch out and expand from there once you have mastered that position.

Expanding is always easier, less costly and less painful than having to re-focus because you're throwing a net that's too broad in the beginning.

And don't worry that there won't be enough prospects in a deeply specific niche. You will be surprised at the reach of the Internet. Begin deep and branch outward and upward. Does that make sense?

If you are a good freelance writer, I think you have a very valuable skill that could certainly be monetized in additional ways to what you're now doing rather than jumping from niche to niche in search of expanding your business.

Focusing on one niche seems to me to be a superior strategy than dabbling in many unrelated niches. It's kind of like the downside to "shiny object syndrome," your attempt to sample so many varied things leads to losing your focus on the one thing that will make you the most money.

      The very best to you,

I heard that IM niche has a huge potential. Think about it, you can sell doing WSO's and through other avenues. But I'd think you would want to start making money first so you have something to teach others

When I first started out, I was into Direct Marketing i.e. post card or yellow letters. I remember the author of one of the books I read, mentioned that he was very proud to send out 30k pieces of marketing mails monthly on "Making Money Online". When he found out from his list broker that he was indeed a little potato in the arena. He noticed the others sends out over 100k pieces monthly on a different subject - weight loss. So i guess you already got the answer to your question.

You have already listed the profitable markets that are available on the internet. I personally would choose one topic where I have some knowledge on it so that I will not be bored by it.

Different people have different opinion on whether it is a good idea to be in a market where there is lots of competition. For me personally, I feel a competitive market is good because it shows that there is money to be made in the market.
