Other than the product, why else would you buy a WSO?

I've bought a few WSOs in my time - some have been fantastic value for money, and I've got a lot smarter in only buying what will actually improve my money making opportunities based on what I need, rather than what sounds good.

I've started to wonder whether anyone feels more compelled to buy a WSO because the person who is selling it gives you an extra reason to buy other than the actual product they are selling?

It ranges from "to pay for my next vacation / sports car / unexpected tax bill" to "to provide for my family / escape from my abusive husband" etc.

I know a sales pitch is important, but surely it should be the product, not the sob story behind it that should make the sale.

I wouldn't buy something from a shop because the sales assistant needed the cash to feed her kids, so why would I buy something on the internet for that reason?

Surely, quality product = sale.

Actually, whether we think it "should be" that way or not, people are much more inclined to act if they are given a "because" to help prompt them. Cialdini explains this in his book, Persuasion.

Many years ago, I worked in a camera shop after school, and one of our salesmen was a wizard at getting people to buy. While the rest of us would just pull down cameras and demonstrate features, explain and teach, Rich did it a bit differently.

He was also good at demonstrating and explaining things. But then, if the customer seemed to like the camera, but wasn't making a decision on his own, Rich would lean forward confidentially and say something like, "I don't know if you're thinking of buying this camera, but we're having a little contest between us guys in the shop, and I only need one more sale to make it over the top. So if you're at all thinking of getting this camera, it woiuld really help me out if you bought it today."

True story. Rich outsold everyone else about 3 to 1 just because he gave people some kind of reason to do what they were already thinking of doing.

Is it ethical to use made-up stories? Is it ethical to use true stories?

Each person will have to make their own decision about this, but that's why people use stories -- for what it's worth.

Cheers from warm and smiling Thailand,
