If you had to spend money on ONE thing...

To get your website going, what would it be?

Aside from domain name, hosting, obvious stuff like that.

What have you guys paid for that helped you the most?

Depends on what the purpose of the site was, but I've probably paid more for decent articles than anything.

Either traffic or content. Depending on the purpose of the site and how much of each I already had.

Don't approach your business with the mindset and attitude that you only can spend money on one thing... because the truth of the matter is you should be spending money on multiple things if you're serious.

I would spend on knowledge. When you know how to do things and how to achieve your goals you are in a superior position.

Knowledge because without it you are floundering around trying to figure out how to do this and that. Then in the end you really aren't accomplishing anything at all.

I am recruiting for an Online Marketing Executive and one of the candidates skypes me saying they just wanted to see if it was not a scam because the website doesn't look professional? See, this is the mentality with a lot of people, they like their sites to look shiny and "professional" as they say, but I know a lot of seasoned marketers will tell you that's not the most important thing to look for on a site, as has been said, quality content does the job every single time, I don't really care what the business is about to have a profitable business you have to learn how to generate leads, and have a decent sales page, and those two in most cases don't look as professional as most people who do not understand this will not see it that way.

I would invest in CONTENT and Propper On-Page SEO optimization.

I've seen countless times people investing in a new website, but don't focus on Optimizing the site for the search engines.

Sure, it depends on what the focus of the website, but it's hard to look past the
lucrative traffic from Google, or other search engines.

you might also consider investing on a website theme that is easy on the eye and is easy to load whenever someone drops by. a pleasant experience while visiting your site will be key to gain those loyal and regular readers, that will eventually generate traffic and income for your site

So, it's a limited budget. I would go for pro account on Elance to get as many good jobs as possible (getting good jobs can be funny..).Assuming I have no experience in ranking sites, aff marketing, adsense etc. my best bet is to write articles and translate...

I'll let you in on a little secret here, that we're not really supposed to share with guys, but if you keep "buying" them, you're going to keep on needing new ones regularly, too.

I was thinking "shoes", but then I read on and realised there was a catch, and that it had to be "to get your website going".

So that excludes "traffic" (I spend time/energy/effort there, not money, anyway) and "the autoresponder service", both of which I need, to earn any money at all - because those aren't really attributes of the site itself? And that brings me down to the obvious stuff like hosting, the domain, and so on.

Damn, there's always a catch. In my years as an affiliate marketer I've really spent next-to-nothing on my websites. I sell ClickBank products (mostly) for a living so it isn't the websites that make the sales, really: it's the emails, of course. The only thing I can think of, really, is that I have a very few nice graphics on a few of my sites, all of which have come from Fiverr (so that's not really "money", is it?).

Nothing, really. I'm going to cheat and say "my Aweber subscription" (which is effectively shared between many sites anyway) just because I can't think of anything else.
