Earning from donation...

I found a site that has a very good content but no related product to sell. I think the site was created out of hobby since I don't see a single ad. I made a thorough research and found out that there is a very small competition although the topic/niche is extremely huge. But again, there is no related product to sell. I noticed the site has a paypal donation button and I am pretty sure that a high percentage of its visitors are donating as the content is enjoyable to read, pretty emotional, and you will certainly visit its other pages.

I am planning to run the same (but not copied content) site and do the donation thing.
Is anyone here running a site that asks donation and what do you think about it?

I'm sorry I could not share the link as it is out of marketing world and the topic is controversial (not adult).

What do you think?

I have been thinking about doing something similar for some time now, but just haven't had the time.

I frequent a controversial political website that uses the donation (PayPal button) model. They get over 30,000 unique visitors a day! More recently, they started incorporating adsense, and a few select banner ads. That's where I first got the idea from.

If you decide to incorporate this method, please let me know how it works out. I think it has a lot of potential if done correctly.

I have no plan on putting adsense since the site will focus on a non-adsense friendly topic. I will do a little more research and will update this thread once I started.

As I saw on more sites, to earn from donation you need to have a big website with tons of traffic and very useful content on it. Share free useful content also you will get donations from visitors..

I think there's a wordpress plugin for donations. That should be one of the first things you should check out. Apparently it links up with your paypal account so donations are quick and seamless. Also, there's a sliding scale. Wouldn't want to miss the big WHALE donors now, would we?

Lots of sites (and some free products) have tried it. Very few seem to make even modest profits this way.

I had a discussion with PayPal regarding the DONATE button. And they said it was not allowed unless it was a non profit.

So if you plan to collect use some other terminology.

The site I mentioned in my earlier post on this thread labels his PayPal button "Bail Money". I thought that was both ingenious and hilarious!

There's a limit anyway. You have to justify your cause if you reach $10,000.. lol

I think rather than run a donation type promo you could even create your own product to sell you would profit more that way.

OT but I wanted to comment on Adie's genius. That Adsense suspended site has got to be one of the worst sites I've ever seen, WHICH made me want to keep looking at it.

You can use your product as a "donate" function - I have seen at least one website use this trick with reasonable success.

Here's how you do it. Offer your readers the choice of a few price points, based upon how much they feel it's worth to them, reminding them that their contribution (be careful with the word donation as others have noted) helps support your site's existence.

For example, offer the choice of paying $5, $10, $15 or $20. Yes, most people will choose the cheapest option, but you may be surprised to see some people "donating" more. The bottom line is that you remind them that you're giving them value.

Yes Jon, I actually have the same idea as I saw another big site that exists through donations alone, but the term "donate" is not found anywhere in the whole site. The site offers useful tips and it has the same options as what you mentioned above.

The donation page says "How can you help to grow us bigger to meet our future goals? Either send us some tips or help us write more tips". Then the variable amount follows like "$5 helps us write 1 tip a day, $10 helps us write 2 to 3 more tips a day", and so on... There is also an option for long term support like $5 monthly subscription, or a one time support (amount will be decided by the donor)

Based on the comments posted under every tip/article and the audience response, I can say that the site is doing great.

Political and social topics that targets specific community, group, race, religion, and ethnicity of people works best I guess. Of course it will not work if your audience are Internet marketers

I once tried the donation model with a very useful service that got a lot of users in a very short time due to its viral nature.

    It never made one cent.

    Not even one.

    Cheers,

If you want to earn from donations, you need a website with a ton of traffic and your readers have to be passionate about the niche - otherwise nobody will freely offer money

Years ago I wrote freeware software that asked for donations. Some of them where quite popular at the time, however donations where few. Why? Because why would people pay when they dont have to? This problem is compounded by the fact that people tend to think things on the internet should be free.
