Default How Do You Track Your Traffic?

Hi all, I was wondering which would be a better tool to track website traffic? Statcounter? Analytics? Anyone has a better tool to recommend?
Thanks!

Yup can't go wrong with Analytics. There's a lot of data hidden within it. Suggest you spend an afternoon just clicking around one of your reports. You'll be surprised what you can get and use to tweak your site and traffic.

This sig under construction...

I am using google analytics aswell.
The only bad thing about it seems to be
the fact that you cannot access the "live" stats.
you will have to wait 24 hours to get data..

I use Statcounter and Google Analytics.

Statcounter is great for seeing things fast - Analytics takes sometime to find the data you want.

Well as a web development company and a professional internet marketing company we use Google Analytics on all our sites, and all our clients sites.

This free tool is very useful, it tells you everything you would ever want to know about your site and visitors. It tells you were your direct traffic is coming from, keywords being used for your sites, bounce times, how long people stay on your site, gives you resolutions, country information and alot more.

This is a great software for marketing. We use it when we do monthly reports for all clients and would recommend this to anyone.

Analytics here...

If you want to see the live stats, just open the date-range panel and select todays date. It generally will show up in your report only the next day, so this is just a faster way to see it.

Analytics is fantastic.. like what everyone else has said. But I also use my host's counter, which is Awstats. That dives a little more into detail which is what I need for some conversions that I use.

Yeah Google Analytics is a must, but it is nice to have something to compare those stats to. If you guys like statcounter, you'll love mint. Stat counter is "free" but you get limited tracking. Running at just $30, Mint is BY FAR the best bang for your buck stats and tacking program out there. Best of all it's light weight and works beautifully with wordpress (and we all know wordpress is stugleing with a decent stat program/plugin). I have multiple copies of Mint plus all the peppers and plugins, for clients, so I would be happy to set you up (for less than $30) if you wanted.

right on about AWstats

so to recap, to get an all out tacking solution especially for self hosted wordpress sites/blogs is:

1.) Google Analytics (free)
2.) Mint ($30 one time fee)
3.) Awstats (free)

Can you outline the main features of Analytics (besides just 'showing what source the traffic visitor came from-which page he came from to your site)

What are the main features with google analatics? and what are the clever tracking methods it can do?

To track analytics, just use Google Analytics.

To track ads and paid traffic, use the pixel tracking options available inside something like an Adwords account. For any other type of paid traffic use something like Adtrackz or Hypertracker. Both good services.

I am not a fan of Google Analytics.

GA does offer very thorough features and analysis for viewing different performance aspects of your site.

I have a problem with GA, though. GA seems to be grossly under-reporting my numbers. I am not sure why this is, but I've had days where it shows a total of seven unique visits for the whole day - my main site (unpaidentertainer.com) has an Alexa rank of 185,000 in the US and 1.4m overall (I know this is nothing to get excited about - but it reflects a site that gets more than seven visits a day). I suspect that GA has a high sensitivity to bots and such and excludes that traffic - but I know for a fact that the numbers are simply not accurate.

I use a combination of AWStats (which came with my hosting package through HostGator), and two Wordpress plugins: CYStats and MYStats. Between the three of them, I get enough information to see where traffic is coming from, how they interact with the site, which pages and posts are most popular - basically every thing you'd want to know.

So far no-one has mentioned this, but since April 28th (if I remember correctly) every AdSense publisher has the option of integrating his AdSense account with Google Analytics, which makes for a really useful tool.

I am not in the AdSense business, but I think that for the AdSense publishers out there the choice is pretty clear. However, I use Analytics on my projects as well since it tells me everything I need to know - and if I need to know something much more specific about my traffic, I simply create (code) my own specific tracker.

I use both statcounter and GA, Ga is a little more user friendly and easier to read bounce rates in my opinion. I think bounce rates for your traffic is important as if people are coming to your site and then taking off without having a good look round i dont class it as fantastic traffic.

Since so many said GA is the best, let me share my experiences.

Although it's free and seems to have lots of reports and to be very big and complex ... it sucks. It's just big, that's it.

I ran a few php test on several websites of mine (& other people) and GA seemed to report about 30-50% of the real traffic. While the requests & all the IPs and user agents (etc etc) were there, GA wasn't showing it.

Conclusion: GA is good as long as you don't really care about exact numbers (it'll give you a good idea of what's happening out there) but if you do, then get a paid tracking system.

Cheers

Why on earth would you want your analytics and web stats on someone else's server?

If people realized how many of these service related companies are also active affiliates, you would craap yourself.

I usually just check my Awstats and Webalizer stats in Cpanel for my hosting account. I had set up GA for a couple of my sites but since I am in and out of Cpanel pretty often throughout the week it's just easier for me to check everything there instead of having to check them through Google. Call me lazy...I can compare month to month stats and see if what I'm doing is working for a particular site...search strings..pages that visitors are hitting on...site referals and 404 errors to tell me if something is out of whack.

Google Analytics ok you can use but my experience is good for addfreestats.com and i am using now for all my sites.

Google Analytics not giving real time reports , but addfreestats give real time reports so you can get more good tracks in real time.

You can track Exit link and Google Adsense clicks from AddFreeStats.com also where your visitors go after they leave your website. What's the link they clicked for leaving your website etc..

So i think these informations are best and good for your site tracking in real time.
