How to track affiliate links?

Good morning everybody, my friend has a membership site which charges £50 per month to its members. He has no idea about internet marketing. At current he has no affiliate program in place. i have performed some keyword research and found there are people seaching for keywords tighly related to his service. Also there is virtually no competition. I asked him if i he would be interested in starting an affiliate program so i can bring him some organic traffic and some more members. I want to ask you guys 2 things:

a) if he is charging £50 per month, what do you think would be a fair commission for affiliates to receive and also should it be a part of the initial fee or recurring?

b) how can my friend track sales and see which affiliate has brought in the new customers? is there a way to do it for free(preferable) or is special software required (he wont have alot of affiliates, in fact it may be only me)

i would love to hear what you guys think, please bear in mind that the site is doing quite well at the moment so my friend isnt too desperate for more members, he asked me how much i would expect per referral and thats why i started this thread

thanks in advance

Alan

An attractive affiliate commission would be 50% or above. He should not be stingy as the money he will make through affiliates is money wouldn't earn otherwise. So he is not losing anything, only winning.

He needs to use an affiliate software to track affiliates. A free one he can use is Post Affiliate (Free Affiliate Software), but its limited in its features. A really good one is Post Affiliate Pro (Affiliate Program Software - Post Affiliate Pro Homepage).

A license for up to 50 affiliates costs only $49.

50% commission or even higher is good reason for affiliates to promote, but a lot depends on how he's planning his funnel (if any). If he has a quality backend product for, say £300, 65% - 75% commission is what I would do AS LONG AS conversion rates on that backend product are at least respectable. Your friend is happy and his affiliates are happy to get 70% comm and if the system is setup for INSTANT payment, they will in all likelyhood run multiple promotions of his website, ESPECIALLY ESPECIALLY ESPECIALLY since that will be RECURRING PASSIVE INCOME for said affiliates.
