How to monitize my website? Need some advice

Hi,

A few days ago I bought a social bookmarking site (didn't really expect to win the auction )
and now want to monitize it so I can get my investment back (which wasn't much, but still) and if possible earn some extra. I know this probably isn't a long term business model, but I'm currently working on a larger project and thought this might help me fund the project in the mean time.

Here are some facts:

Average of 17K unique visitors per month
Alexa ranking: 51.701
members: 12805

I only have the site 2 days, and about 50 new members signed up during that period. I don't have a name, only a username and email address, but can't mail all of them at once from the admin area.

I added chitika, but will have to wait to see if this makes me money.

I know I can email them (if I find a way to mail them all), but the problem is that the people who join aren't targeted to one niche. They share all kinds of things. Or maybe I should turn it into a niche social bookmarking site?

Does any of the experts here know a way to monitize this? After all, the site gets quite good traffic.

Thanks in advance and looking forward to hear your ideas/thoughts

Nico

PS: the site runs on the pligg script. not many modules exist for this. Would be great if I could turn it into a wordpress site, but no idea if that is possible to do.

  • It sounds to me like you don't want to put too much work into it, but still want to make some money. Depending on the specifics of the traffic, maybe slap up some adsense ads and see how that goes.

Also consider selling ad space directly to other site owners. Depending on the PR and other factors, you might be able to get some decent income that way.

If you want to do email marketing, that might be harder because, as you said, the traffic isn't targeted toward one niche.

    Good luck!

well you need detailed analytic of your traffic then choose right products accordingly ..
If done right affiliate commissions could be tremendous

And to get list of your members for some specific niche why not build a squeeze page and then collect emails there
You could use some of your space for a banner directing to squeeze page and check out results for different niches..
If i were you i would start from dating then beauty, weight loss and so on

Is your traffic actually humans, or bots/programs submitting bookmarks?

What the PR or Domain Authority? Maybe offer "featured" listing that stay on the homepage for a period of time

If you have legit members and you can send emails out to them, that would be the best way to monetize this type of website. This could really be a long term six figure business if you know exactly what to market to your members. Not sure what niche is good for a social bookmarking site though.

Do what the other social networks are doing. Sell ads

      Thanks for the replies.

Yes they are members, as captcha is enabled on the registration page.

It seems selling ads on the site and also emailing them is the way to go. Just need to figure a way out what topics they might be interested in and get them on an autoresponder automatically when they sign up.

If you have more ideas, please let me know.

      regards

      Nico

Btw, in about 10 hours time, 74 members registered. not bad I think?

hello does your site have much content?if yes then you try monetizing your site by using adsense - it pays far better than chitika and do you know where those members are coming from? (Country) you should be able to survey/monitor them first and check what are their likes and dislikes

Yes the site has much content. I can't use adsense. About 10 years ago there were groups of people who like to go to one site and click on the adsense links so google would flag the site 'red'. Google thought it was me and they suspended my account and until today don't want to reactivate it. Although I didn't have anything to do with it.

Anyway, I'm going to add google analytics next week and indeed monitor where they are coming from. I do think that many people who post to such sites might be interested in SEO. we'll see

          regards
