Your one-click unsubscribe is hurting your list

I don't have to over-explain this to you guys, but I did experience it yesterday with one of the lists I run. Some "advanced" corporate mail server security software will actually follow all links in an email to check for malware at the destination - including the "unsubscribe" link.

I wonder how many of us have had users subscribe to our lists, only to be auto-unsubscribed by a security scanner without their knowledge. It would explain why you see the occasional subscribe/unsubscribe before they ever even received your first email.

I think it depends from your autoresponder service

It would, yeah - some of them would be immune, because when you click the link it prompts you with an "are you sure you want to unsubscribe" type of dialog or makes you click a button. Those will be fine.

It's the ones where when you click the unsubscribe link it just says "Thanks, you're unsubscribed" that are the trouble - when email security apps are following every link in a message to scan the content destination, they are triggering the unsubscribe if no further action is required on the page.

Ya that makes sense. You could also use a suppression list as the unscrubscibe page or offer them to be emailed less frequently but like you said it all depends on the autoresponder

Thanks for bringing this up! I guess we all need to make sure we're using an autoresponder that has a two-click opt-out.

few times... i try to unsubscribe from the mailing list ......if they send me more than 1 newsletter a week but this "prompt thing" or "two click unsubscribe" really save me from unsubscribe . two click unsubscribe give you chance think twice before unsubscribe may you some good offers in futures.

What system are you using? I am as surprised as the others now I would not be confident in any system I use. Were all your contacts got unsubscribed?

I had a link to a more detailed writeup which explained how/what happened but apparently some overzealous mod deleted it. Makes me wonder why bother posting anything at all sometimes... But no, not all contacts, just the individual ones who are on a corporate mail server that automatically follows links in messages to scan the destination pages. If it follows the unsubscribe link and there is no prompt on the destination page, they get unsubscribed without their knowledge.
