1 site or multiple sites?

Hey guys,

I am looking to monetize my passions. There are two things I am particularly interested in: motivating/inspiring others to live their best lives possible and being a musician.

For the motivation stuff I plan on blogging, making youtube videos and then eventually developing some products (ebooks, etc.).

For the music stuff I plan to write my own music, make music videos for youtube, and then offer mp3s on a site for download (not to mention itunes, etc.).

I can't decide of these should be on one website or if I should create two websites and in a sense have two separate businesses. If it's all on one site it would be a good way to introduce my motivational fans to my music and vice versa but at the same time I worry that having these two seemingly unrelated topics on the same site would be confusing (although not entirely because I tell people to embrace their passions and for me that would be music so they would see me practicing what I preach right in front of them).

So I don't know if I should keep these separate or not. What do you think?

  • Two sites. It will be better in the long run, and you can always cross promote them easily enough.

Having everything on one would seem unfocused and even confusing.

    Good luck!

I suggest just keeping one idea on each site. Otherwise it's just weird and you can't target your audience the right way at all.

  • For self help / music, two separate sites would be best. It seems to me that so far everyone agrees. However, unless your goal is to become the "self help musician" or something similar. In that case you would brand yourself as such on one site, where you give motivating / inspiring advice while continuously highlighting the fact that you are a musician as well. Most successful musician / self help gurus that I personally know keep things separate though.

I totally agree with using 2 sites as they would both be much more targeted and once they begin to grow some you can always cross promote. For me the more targeted the site the easier to grow and rank in SERPs.

I would suggest creating two different sites and then cross promoting on your facebook pages and email. Also you might want to think abotu creating music and selling the royalty rights to it.

yeah I spent a year making a website that had potential but too many directions and ultimately was a bunch of work for nothing. I did learn from my mistakes and I'm more focused now in each endeavor.

two sites will prove to be more beneficial in the long haul. it means you are multiplying your resources and your capacity to earn through your site, so i suggest you aim to put up a blog for each of your interests. good luck!

I'd create 2 sites, you could still link them to each other.

Two sites is definitely the way to go. Otherwise you do run the risk of confusion.

Personally I have multiple sites. However, for beginners i'd advise to stick to one and start building out. Doing too many websites at one time can get you in a mess and you end up with a lesser quality site.

Stick to your passion and build an authority site about something you KNOW about. That's the way to success.

    Hey CanMan86,

Put everything on one site man.

Let me ask you a question... Is playing the guitar in anyway related to Internet Marketing? (except it makes you look cool )

No, it's not... But people love it when Frank Kern or Eban Pagan play the stings in their videos.

I think it would be a cool site if you have both.

Using two separate websites can be a great idea instead of using one huge portal and bulking up constantly with contents which on the surface look too different from each other. Use a solid shared hosting account offering multiple website hosting to manage both websites on your server. Naturally different stuff will appear on your websites, for the motivation area, lots of videos and the music site will contain many audio feeds and educational tips and lessons, these fields should not merge via using one site.

I would start with one site and then once you begin getting traffic to it, you could begin the second site.

I personally think it would be too difficult to start with two sites at one time. One of them is going to get neglected.

I would do two separate websites. I would take the one where you could monetize it faster. Meaning you have more content ideas and ways of making money. If you already have music created, start there. Build that website up then when you feel like that site is carrying it's own create the next and build it up the same way.
