Creating Wordpress Themes to Sell

Have any of you ever created Wordpress themes to sell on a site like Themeforest or Mojo or any other theme marketplace? I have a few questions about this - not about those sites in particular, but I'm curious what motivated you to create a theme for sale in a marketplace and what your results were (number of downloads), how much support buyers required, and overall whether you found in the end it was worth your time.

Your best bet would be to talk to guys that actually sell on Themeforest. It's very unlikely that you find them on WF.

I did some research some time ago on Themeforest and I found that it is quite lucrative. There are companies that specialize in selling themes there. They crank out one theme after the other.

When business was slow awhile back I gave custom WP theme and plugin creation serious consideration.

I researched it at the time and came to the conclusion that if you have the talent to make a great/unique theme that's different from most (there are so many on the market that differ very little from each other), and tailored to a specific market and or a business's particular needs, that you can do quite well with it.

Things turned around and I never followed through with it, but I have also designed and built several custom WP themes and plugins from scratch for several of my clients, but never released any of them into the market for sale to the public, and was paid quite well for them.

designing and selling customized WP themes can prove to be a very lucrative idea, given the number of people that create not only a blog but a number of blogs on a regular basis. once you have a substantial number of designs to sell, i am sure you will have no problem selling them to blog or site owners.

Are you going to create them yourself? You would be surprised at how cheap you would be able to get a custom theme created on oDesk or a similar site.

I have sold a few themes in the past and all themes have been profitable. Overall, I didn't think customer support wasn't too big of an issue. I have a fair amount of knowledge in web development and was able to answer all questions fairly quickly. If you are outsourcing the theme you should be able to ask the developer to provide support.

It takes a bit of startup money to get the ball rolling, but once it gets rolling, creating Wordpress themes can be lucrative.
