Limitations of shared hosting

Hi guys,

I would like to hear from you with more experience in this matter
what are the actual limits in terms of traffic and bandwith (downloads)
on a shared hosting. For example Host Gator's shared hosting acount.

How much traffic to a website is needed for server to 'go down' or 'crash' ?
Or how many people downloading a product (zipped) at the same time?

Is it possible at all to run a small to medium product launch on a shared
hosting?

If not, what are the minimum requirements ?

My own opinion is to guesstimate how much traffic your launches will be getting, then approach your host company and explain the situation, they should be able to let you know what you need.

It is definitely possible to run a small to medium product launch on hostgator. I've been using them for some time and they can handle a lot for cheap. Plus if you're product launch is successful (and by the sounds of your post you're confident it will be) you can use a tiny part of that revenue to get your own server on hostgator (or elsewhere) if you find their normal shared package a bit tight.

This actually depends on the server specs, resources, and configuration. A well configured, high end server can handle heavy traffic very well, where a low end server could easily be crashed by a small surge in traffic.

And it is possible to run a small to medium product launch on a shared
    hosting account.

I suggest using a managed vps plan for $30-$50 per month. A vps plan is a fixed portion of a dedicated server so you'll have more server resources to use.

Thank you very much for your answers and suggesstions.

I'm glad to hear that Host Gator shared hosting can handle
      small/medium product launch.

I don't want to invest in dedicated server if it's not necessary.

However, managed vps plan for $30-$50 is not too expencive
and I'd like to know more about those options.

Can you suggest some managed vps?

i myself am with solarvps, yes, the usual rate is about $50/month. If you go to webhostingtalk.com (i think thats the site)..there are COUNTLESS hosters offering specials/deals on VPS.

I got managed w/ 768MB memory/Cpanel and plenty bandwidth..although i found out my experience would be enough that i actually don't need managed But its good since you can always request things like backups and assistance.

    Alminc,

3 VPS's personally trialled recently (after research at webhostingtalk.com) and
    would use again/recommend:

~ WiredTree (selected to stay with)
    ~ LiquidWeb
    ~ ServInt

All excellent support and fully managed. Deciding factor was WiredTree offered the
best cost per performance (memory + bandwidth) at the time.

Check webhostingtalk.com forum for each company's latest offers.

    Best,
    Adam

    Adam,

What VPS hosting plan do you recommend on WiredTree?
    Which one do you use?

    ProductCreator,
Thank you for your advice. Static pages will be used.

the biggest problem with shared is actually NOT the traffic/bw...but the fact that most of them have horrible, intolerant policies.

For example, i have a number of autoblogs where some plugins (namely Caffeinated Content) once in a while consume more CPU usage than normal - it's a bug of those plug-ins and not under my control.

I got suspended repeatedly because of such issues, from one day to another. Some accounts had 15+ sites attached to it which were all down because of a mal-functioning WP plugin.

Now i moved most of my sites to a VPS where i have 100% control. I pay more but its 100% worth it instead of depending on some shared hosting and its shortcomings.

  • Shared hosting has a problem with distribution of resources. If all you did was run simple html pages fine. Run a script that needs a little "extra" CPU power for even a few minutes and it sends everything into a dismal spin.

So your product launch would be fine as long as everyone doesn't hit your site at the same time. Othewise you run a risk of tripping the allocation Gods and having your account shut down and losing all your momentum.

I too have been very impressed with wiredtree, the 3 problems I've had
(just configuration issues/questions), their support fixed problems in 15 minutes or less, even on the weekends!
