Craigslist ... worth or not?

Hi my marketers friend!

I was thinking about the possibility of using Craigslist to do lead generation.

Leaving aside the difficulty to post there ... do believe it's worth?

How many replies/leads can I receive from an ad there?

So far I have not seen mention of numbers regarding CL.

Can you help me to understand if it is worth the effort or not?

Thanks!

There are a lot of threads ( many recent) in the forums about Craiglist. If you go to the top of the page in the red toolbar, hit "search" and type in "craigslist." You'll find threats about the time of day to post them, methods people are using, etc.

I've tried the UK version of Craigslist and it did not work for me at all.
Perhaps others have had better experiences.

I Use Craig's list to advertise my ebooks, digital art for sale and my Windows PC consulting services and my website Design/Development/Marketing/Maintenance services.

I get mixed results from Craig's list. So far nothing (in a year) for art sales and not much for ebooks (but I have not researched how they affect traffic to those sites).

For my computer and web services I get maybe 1 phone call per week (this is in one metro area only and I'm in a suburb, not in the city, so limited prospects).

Some prospects just want free advice, some just want to talk you into a lower than profitable fee and a few are serious. Rarely (but it happens) I get a mentally unstable person. Usually you don't find that out until you have a first meeting or other longer contact.

I do give free telephone advice and ideas, while looking at their website (if they have one) and I'll talk at length for free. I figure if I show my biz expertise and marketing creativity they may come back some day with a real project. And I'm a real windbag, plus love talking about this stuff.

Of all my wonderful past and current clients, maybe 2% came from Craig's List - but it does happen. I tend to use Craig's only when times get tough and client projects slow way down.

    Hope this helps...

Craiglist, like any other advertising tool, can produce hot leads...

    ...and a bunch of nothing.

I pay a guy to post for my copywriting services and have generated over $30,000 from CL this year alone.

    So in my humble opinion...

    It works.

But just like anything, Craigslist only work IF:

You're leading prospects to a page that produces action (whether it's opting into your list, hiring you, buying a product... or whatever...)

    Likewise...

You copy in the Craigslist ad itself has to be compelling.

    The rules still apply.

You get as much as your ad is effective - if that makes sense.

How can you send people to a landing page?

The Cl messaging system unfortunately is very restrictive and does not allow you to spread your links so easily!

        My links get in fine.

Some ads get ghosted... others don't.

I personally don't deal with it. There are plenty of people who post for cheap. My guy only charges me for the ads that go live.

Very hard to post in the job section, but you will get big traffic if your ad stick.

If you're selling a service or a physical product then Craigslist
and many other online classified sites have real value.

Especially if just one sale can make you hundreds or thousands
    of dollars in profits.

A pile of stuff is being sold on these sites so there is definitely
    money there.

If you're trying to sell information products then it's probably not
    the best site.

    Kindest regards,
    Andrew Cavanagh

I tried using Craigslist a few times and I never generated any good leads from there. Probably because I only posted a few times and my ad could have been written better. I think if you hire someone who has a lot of accounts on Craigslist and can post ads regularly for you it would bring in good results. Posting ads everyday can be extremely time consuming especially if you only have on account. I think the limit is like 2-3 ads per 72 hours for each account. There are people out there who have a lot of accounts and therefore can post a lot of ads.

So in my opinion, if you post a lot ads regularly, the results should be good. The trick is to figure out HOW you can post a lot of ads.

    Good luck!

Craigslist is great if you understand how to use it. Read up on some info about craigslist here on the warrior forum so you can get an understanding of the proper way to use craigslist. I used to get a couple leads daily by posting one ad a day on craigslist. Some people take this to the next level by posting multiple ads but, there is a specific way you have to go about doing that.

Are you selling services or infoproducts?

If you're having challenges posting ads with links directed to another page, there are CL service providers in the Warriors For Hire section. I think I saw their thread a week or two ago.

On the other hand, I agree with Mark. It all boils down to how your ad makes the reader feel obliged to take action.

I love Craigslist and have been marketing in their for a few years now. All the way from a local Financial business I used to own to using it for arbitrage successfully.

I can't say anything bad about craigslist because it's been very good for me. Just don't be spammy in there because you will get flagged but that's pretty obvious.

    Good Luck,

Does it want phone verification while posting an ad?

Yes From time to time Craigslist will ask to verify your phone but unless you don't have a phone this shouldn't be a problem at all.

Everyone and their gramma sells forwarded numbers these days. Numbers for PVA's are not a problem.

Craigslist was awesome up until 3 years ago. Every year it gets harder and harder to post and the average CL user has gotten smarter and thinks more before whipping out that credit card. My income went from $3,100+ a month to about $600 now.

It has been ok for me, but it depends what niche you are in as well. I got some traffic from it for my product launch, and got a few conversions which was nice. I do find it hard to get quality targeted traffic from Craigslist though, and usually stick to other forms of marketing like article and forum marketing.
