Youtube + adsense question about pre-roll ads and embedded videos

I want to try out youtube + adsense. But my traffic will mainly come from external websites. I don't have experience with adsense on videos, but I have read that on-video ads are useless and I won't earn a penny from them, most of the earnings comes from pre-roll ads. The problem is that as far as I know, pre-roll ads won't show up on videos being played on external websites. Am I right? If so, is it possible to allow playback only on youtube? I mean, I remember seeing these embedded videos and when you click play a link-message comes up that playback is only allowed on youtube itself, so you would have to click that link and be redirected to youtube to watch it. That would be a way around my problem to make people watch pre-roll ads. But I can't find an option on youtube to do that. I have found an option to totally disable embedding, but I don't think that is the thing that I'm looking for. Advices?
