I know blogger is a good start

I have recently come up with a new niche blog I could run. My Question to everyone is I do not want to purchase another domain. So if I am just going to use a blog would blogger be sufficient and be profitable enough to start with out using wordpress.

Yes you can use blogger for niche blogs. The only downside in relation with wordpress is that SEO options for blogger aren't really good. What you see is what you get.

You can also run your niche blog on a subdomain in your site. If you persue this option I wouldn't link between your main domain and your subdomain unless your content is related.

  • Why do people put all the time and effort into properties they can not control? The low cost of owning your own domain vs the risk of being shut down at any time for any reason doesn't make any sense. Unless you don't value or place any value on your time. Nothing wrong with using blogger to test things or create sites you don't really care about for whatever purpose, but it's certainly not a platform for real business.

Oh I agree with you 100% I would be more reluctant to buy the domain if I wasnt already working on building up several others. I have been completely consumed trying to build these others. Until I have them finished I do not want to purchase another domain is all. I my self have used blogger before just never tried any of my niches on it. I just used them to talk mainly about most of my affiliate programs. I also did not add any adsense or other money makers on them.

      Define "real business."

My definition is one that a real business is one that makes a profit.

If you can make money with no cash outlay, I'd say that's a pretty good ROI.

I think it is more professional to make the investment for the domain. Get a "general", cool domain you could use for many projects - and then it won't seem like such a problem to buy another. Use wordpress, it's free.

You can use your own domain with both Blogger and WordPress.com, as well as WordPress.org. With Blogger, though, you're limited to their 'classic' themes.

I use Blogger, WordPress.com and WordPress.org - here's my view of the differences:

Um, I'm not so sure about blogger. A pro blogger friend of mine warned me against setting up a free or paid domain there because he got shut down for reasons he couldn't understand and without warning just when his blog was taking off. That's why I always invest on domains that are on wordpress for sites i intend to earn off from

As long as your Blogger blog isn't a spam machine you can get it reinstated easily if this happens. The most common cause of it is doing something that resembles an automated posting program, such as cutting and pasting in an article and clicking publish right away.

One thing to remember though is that your 'self-hosted' WordPress blog can get shut down by your hosting company, especially on a shared host. If you install a plugin that causes problems or you hit the front page of Digg or CNN or have something else that causes problems with their bandwidth you'll find your account suspended there too.

There always can be complications so be prepared, be diverse and know what might cause you problems with your particular hosting situations.

If you aren't experienced with SEO and how coding works, go for Wordpress, if not go for Blogger. Overall I suggest having your own domain.

What I used to do and am rebuilding now is a coordinated effort. I use the free accounts at blogger and word press to get some free (shameless self-promoting) backlinks with spidered sites and my choice of keywords. Put in a little content and try to add to it every now and then. I know all too well how precious time is though, especially if you have to work for a living on top of being in the middle of creating your own sites and products.

Personally I am concentrating my first efforts on survival ... making enough to pay the bills ... and then looking for ways to make enough money to purchase as much software as possible to automate most of the processes. I use Joomla and with my current setups here, each page takes about fifteen minutes. Multiply that by five primary sections on my site ... let's just say you definitely have my sympathy there. After that, like I said, I am just looking at whatever ways I can discover to automate as much of the task as possible. Right now I have about 3000 pages to repopulate from a site I just lost.

    Automation is key I think.

    Just my two cents

I also use blogger and have had good results.

However, I am not an HTML guy. I would like to go to Wordpress this year, what would be a good place to start?

Create a free blog at WordPress.com to get a feel for how it works. You can't monetize a blog there but it's a good way to learn the basics. Then getting hosting and install WordPress there. Any decent host has cPanel and Fantastico which makes this process very easy.

Blogger is a great way to get started without investing money for a domain, hosting, etc.

Once you start making money that way, you can "upgrade," but then you will be using business profits, not grocery money.

Blogger blogs are also a great way to get the "feel" for blogging, as well.
