$80,000/Year By Outsourcing The Production Of A Fitness Supplement?

Tim Ferris mentioned in his book, the 4 Hour Workweek, that he realized how surprisingly easy it was to outsource the production of his 'Brain-Quicken' supplement, which by itself, makes him $80,000 a year.

Any ideas on how I could go about doing this with my own fitness/weight-loss supplement?

  • There is much more to the success of a product than just finding a company that will produce the product. Earning $80,000 a year from a product is not achieved simply because a product is outsourced. The income (assuming we are talking net profits) is made because the product is properly marketed. Surprisingly, many folks don't think that far ahead, thus there are tons of stories about having a garage full of product, with no idea on how to market it. And on the other side of the coin, there are hundreds of crappy supplements, "on the market".

Tim hasn't owned that company/product since 2009 when he sold it to a private equity firm.

And he mentioned this in his book, and I've found it to be true since I've outsourced production of bodybuilding supplements... it ain't easy.

First of all, he busted his butt to even get it to a point where he could outsource it all, he mentioned how he was working 80+ hour weeks.

But yes, once everything is systematized and set up right, THEN you can have someone take over the day to day operations.

For me, it was much easier to have one company do it all for me, which is create the products, slap my label on it, and send it out for me. All I had to do is market it and the rest was hands off.

But don't let anyone fool you... anything worthwhile, profitable, and successful is NOT easy to get going. It may be easy once it has picked up steam, has been systematized, and is running smooth... from there you can have someone else manage the "pieces of the machine"... .but to get that machine operating well is not easy.

I know 10 or more fitness guys who sell supplements they created, and all will say it was tough, and they're not sure if they'd do it again because of the legalities now of creating/selling ingestible products.

Creating a real weight loss/fitness supplement product which isn't bogus, is just about one of the most expensive things you can do in direct response marketing. Due to the short term mentality of the industry not too many people have dabbled in that area.
