What is the real value of an Alexa ranking?

My website/social network now ranks around 85.000 and going towards the 50.000, but what is the real value of it. When does an Alexa ranking means something for advertisers?
As I understand it is even possible to buy and Alexa ranking or influence it. But still it must have value to some marketers. Or is an Alexa ranking only interesting for the top 1.000 and all website that have a lower ranking are not really that interesting?
If the ranking has value, how to monetize it the best way?

I'm not affiliated with the above site at all, I just thought it was a well written article that addressed the OP's question directly...

It's of possible, slight, debatable relevance if you're (i) selling a website to someone who for some reason "believes in it", or (ii) selling advertising space on a website to someone who for some reason believes in it.

For anyone else, and any other purposes, it's more or less a total waste of time, signifying nothing.

All it can really tell you is the numbers of people who have the so-called Alexa Toolbar installed and running in their browsers to visit a site. (And those people are all internet marketers: nobody else uses it, so it doesn't even tell you anything about customer traffic).

    All clarified here ...

What about using it to compare my website with similar websites, does it tell me something about their traffic and trust ability?

I'm not aware that it tells you anything about "trust" at all (unless there's some secret factor of how much the owners of "Alexa rankings" trust you!). The only traffic it can compare (as between your site and another site) relates to the number of visitors to each who have the Alexa toolbar installed and running in their browsers at the time of their visits.

It can't measure any other traffic. The only way to monitor traffic is through a site's server logs.

Arguably, if you have a site which is visited mostly by internet marketers and the other site does, too, it might have some tangential relevance to a traffic comparison. But not otherwise.

The last time I looked at my "Alexa rankings", I checked out two of my sites. One, which is a private blog only really for my rather widespread family and gets almost no traffic at all, had a really low "Alexa ranking" and apparently "gets enormous traffic" (but not according to my server logs!), and the other, which genuinely gets so much traffic, in floods, that I have to have special hosting for it, is apparently nowhere to be seen. :p

It really is as unreliable as that. But when you look at what it's actually measuring, that's not a great surprise.

Other than possibly, slightly, arguably, for the two specific purposes I mentioned above, it's not even worth talking about.

Exactly, that's the answer to your question in a single sentence, or "nut shell"...

It basically gauges traffic, but to Alexa's point (thee Alexa ) its easily manipulated, and therefor proves nothing...

So when I understand you all, my Alexarank means nothing unless I'm in the top 100, 1.000 or 10.000?
