What I Just Got Told By An SEO Company on my 3 Gov Backlinks

So I hired some SEO company to do some SEO for me. Nothing too major. Just a few high PR profile backlinks that kind of thing.

One of them was 3 GOV links. Of which, you cannot view them unless you login to the account.

Warriors! These are known as "non-public" profile URLs correct?

And these are known as "useless to SEO" because search engine cant crawl them. Correct?

Please tell me if I'm wrong here. Please do.

Here is my conversation wit them;

Me:
Hi thanks a lot. However I have a problem.

Have checked the gov links and none of them exist.
Them:
Hello,
About gov links
1) Did you register? I have checked the links and all of them are existing. PLease use these access
She gave me the 3 links with username and passwords.
Me:
Uhhmmm if you have to login to view them. What use is that for SEO????
I shouldn't have to register for anything that's your job and what I just paid you for is it not? What you mean register? Why would I need to register? I have the account login details here so why are you telling me to register again??

These are called "non-public" URLS and they are USELESS for SEO because search engines don't even know they exist!
Them:
You are not right, cause engines have the accounts at these forums and they can check the profiles easily and see the links.
Me:
What!

So search engines. They have my username and password for these accounts do they?

How can they read the link on that site if it needs to login to my account first but it doesn't have my password??

Tell me that.

Wow I can't believe you've said that and expect me to believe it.

I've been doing SEO for 7 years. You are not dealing with a total SEO newbie here as you seem to think you are.

Tell me this, how has google got my login details for a profile on a site that was only created a few days ago?

Please, please do tell me that I'd love to hear what you have to say......

I am now going to put what you have said on about 3 top SEO forums so we call all have a giggle at how stupid you are saying that.

Trying to fob me off by saying that search engines can login to sites what a load of complete bullshit!

So you're telling me, that Google has my password for my 3 GOV backlinks and part of its algorithm is to login to that site (with my username and password) and check if my links exists yes?

That is what you are saying yes?
I'm waiting on their reply still. But can you believe the audacity of what she said to me? Trying to tell me that search engines can see my link on my profile on that GOV site even though the profile isn't publicly viewable and requires a password to login and view the profile.

This is news to me. Did anyone else here know that Google has the password to ALL and EVERY single profile you've ever created online and can login and view your links on your profile?

Did you know that? I didn't know that.

I'll tell you why WE didn't know that..... Because its BS that's why!

      Wow.

The person who sent you that response was suggesting that the SEs had their own accounts, which would allow them to see information that required a visitor be logged in to view.

Lots of sites require you to be logged in to view members' profiles. You don't need every member's access info to do that. Just your own.

You're freaking out about a "lie" which is nothing more than your misreading of what was said to you, probably by someone for whom English is not a first language.

Brent was attempting to be helpful.

Responses like the ones you had posted here, and the abusive tone taken by some of the folks in the SEO section when posts are moved there from main discussion, have convinced me that the proper way to deal with misplaced posts is simply to delete them.

I have removed all the SEO-related responses from this thread.

This might be related - the New York Times seems to have a system where Google can index its articles, but humans can only read 10 articles during a certain time period before being required to register and pay for a subscription.

          Brian,

Lots of sites have that sort of set-up. I believe it can be done with a simple .htaccess tweak, although the Times probably has a bit more advanced system for it.

Or maybe Google just bought their spider a subscription.

Edited to add: It might not be anything more complex than a session cookie-based limit, now that I think of it...
