If you're going to use only 1 format, go with MP4 (because most mobile devices cannot play FLV).

That said, I think it's best to use HTML5 video with Flash fallback. Most good video players offer this now (Flowplayer, JW Player, etc). Which means you will have to render your videos to 3 different formats (MP4, WEBM, OGV), but it will be far more compatible with your website viewers than just using a single format.

This is a good converter, which can render to all 3 HTML5 formats at once.

And if you use this on your MP4 files before you upload them, they will begin playback much quicker (ie no "buffering").

    MP4 definitely.

It gives the best size/quality ratio.

MP4 is just a "container" format and has nothing to do with a video's file size or quality. The codec (ie h.264, VP8, etc.), bitrate, and framerate are what determines a video's file size and quality.

The only reason you would choose one "container" format over another is for browser compatibility.

I don't do much with the technical side of videos.

All I know is I always export my videos as MP4 and they are much better quality at smaller file sizes than FLV or WMV or AVI are.

So yes, MP4 give me the best size/quality ratio.

MP4, FLV, and AVI are all "container" formats. WMV is a codec.

The reason you are experiencing different playback quality between different container formats is because you're using different settings for each one. You'll find that if you use the exact same codec, bitrate, framerate, dimensions, etc. for each of your container formats, that the video playback quality and file size of each format will be exactly the same.

AVI is the exception, as it normally only holds "uncompressed" video (which results in the best playback quality, but also the largest file sizes).

Again, the only reason you would choose one container format over the other is browser/device compatibility -- the container formats in and of themselves have nothing to do with file size / quality.

I edited thousands of hours of video in a previous job, which involved lots of experimenting with different formats, codecs, etc., so it turned me into a bit of a video geek.
