One website or two in similar niches

I have a quick question for everyone. I currently run two websites and I'm working on a few others. I tend to write about things that I am knowledgeable about or have a passion for.

One of my "authority" websites is not ranking at all (it's in a highly competitive niche), so I'm going to throw in the towel and start a new one. My question is, if you have two niches that are somewhat related (ie. health food and exercise, or aquariums and ponds) would you start separate websites or combine the two ideas?

It would seem that if you have two targeted website names it would be easier to rank in each niche. Plus the ads on the main page would be easier to target to each niche.

Is there anything that I'm missing here, besides the obvious disadvantage of paying for two hosting fees?

Let me know what all of your thoughts are.

Thanks.

I would focus on one site mate.

The reason why is because then your site will have more of an opportunity to become a massive authority in your niche.

Exactly what Simon said - Just focus on 1 site...You can expand your reach with 2 sites based upon the 1st site's success.

Thanks for the replies. I'll stick with doing one huge authority site. Its kind of what I was leaning towards anyways, but I just wanted some other perspectives.

I would actually focus on more than one site. You need a diverse culture out there to grow your earnings. Not saying to add content to the main site but have more than just one egg in a basket is all.
