You might consider starting a website where you can post images of your work. You could include a blog on on your website and maybe post on a certain interval to attract and retain followers. Commenting on other blogs, Facebook pages, and Twitter accounts will also help you attract new followers. It takes time, so be patient.

Great tips here ... I agree. I think a blog is a must-have, even if it's just a subdomain on your main site.

Post frequent articles related to your field and you'll position yourself as a "go-to" person. Your visitors will then be exposed to examples of your work as well, so this should give you some really good traction for attracting new clients.

Sounds like you're doing a lot of things online, but I would recommend doing some old fashion door to door work as well. Targeting smaller mom/pop type of businesses.

Show a quick portfolio of past work you've done and I think you'll be able to score a few clients this way as well.

I'm a designer myself and this is a trick that I've done several times in the past, but this is for offline business. You go find a cafes/restaurants/companies that have bad graphics or designs. You talk to the manager for giving a suggestion and tell them that you'd create designs for them and show them later. If they don't like it, then they don't have to take it.

So, there's a risk but it's worth it because it's very likely that they would take it. You choose those cafes/restaurants because their designs are terrible, right? And think about it in long term point of view. Ask them to have your business card on each table or at the cashier desk, etc. Place your details as the designer copyright and credit at the corner of their menus/calendar/whatever you create for them.

This way, you can advertise for free to all customers in those restaurants/cafes/etc. It's very often other businessman who comes to eat at a restaurant ask the manager about who they use for the designer if they like it. So make sure you make it so easy for that restaurant to share your details.

I would 2nd putting together a web site or blog of your own where you can showcase your work and promote it outside of freelance sites and forums. It helps build your brand and makes you look more professional.

    Try promoting your services OFFLINE.

Visit local Meetups and Chamber of Commerce meetings. Hand out your business card, flyers and samples of your work. You can also select a niche and target those local businesses and other brick-n-mortar businesses that could use your services based off what you observe.

Get all your work in one resource (blog / website) and promote that on the sources listed in the topic.

    Hi,
I also agree with the majority here. Starting your own site can be the best thing to do, just make sure you invest a lot of time in it. Don't let it waste! You can try other sites like fiverr, peopleperhour or odesk to get some gigs.
