Default Anyone here do transcription?

I have 6 hours of material and am wondering who to send it to for someone to transcribe it and proofread it and get it into word format.

Are there services available or does anyone here do that? (pm if you do)

Just Google "transcription services" and you'll have about 7 and a half million sites to choose from. I used to do my own transcription, and one hour of talking usually takes 4 or 5 hours to transcribe - if you're a touch typist - and usually totals around 9,000 to 10,000 words. Using a foot pedal cuts the work time almost in half.

If you opt to do it yourself, two programs I've used are Transcription Buddy and Express Scribe.

My recommendation - hire it out and pay the 1 or 2 cents per word. It's well worth it to pay somebody the 200 bucks and have that 24 to 30 hours free to do something more productive.

Oh, and if you want the proofreading, that'll probably cost extra. I always do my own proofreading, but that's what I used to do for a living.

Cheers from warm and smiling Thailand,
Charles

Have you looked on Elance or one of the other freelance service sites? There are people offering that service, seems to me.

What you're talking about is something I did for many years with the old dictaphone system. Not sure how I could help you internet-wise since you really do need that trusty foot pedal.

Hi Sylvia,

It's good to meet another transcription pro.

That foot pedal saved me so much time and made me a ton of money with doubled productivity. And now they have USB footpedals for around a hundred bucks. That way you can use one of the transcription MP3 playback programs and have the same foot pedal interaction. If I were still doing it for a living, I wouldn't hesitate for a second to invest in a couple of pedals (always have a backup when you're in business).

Note to Winebuddy - you can look in other sections of WF (classifieds and work for hire) and probably find "local" folks to do the job.

Cheers from warm and smiling Thailand,
Charles

there is free transcription playback software Transcribing Equipment - Free Digital Transcription Software and you can buy a foot pedal, or use keyboard hot keys, that is if you plan on doing it yourself...

Hi, Winebuddy,

I would be more than happy to help you with your transcription project! My business is transcription and blogging, as well as editing and proofreading. My fee is $.01 a word (if it is just you or you and one other person speaking). Providing the transcription in Word is no problem at all.

My website is my log-in name .com...

They won't allow me to post my email until I have 15 posts, but you can contact me through my website.

Hi Winebuddy,

I highly recommend Transblogger4hire. Karen has done transcription for me, and she is very accurate and an incredibly fast typist. She is also a writer so you get both skills when she works for you. PM me if you want more info!

Best,
Julie
