Default Your take on CMS?

I feel like a newbie again! Four years of full-time internet marketing and I've only just discovered CMS.

So... what is it? More importantly, what can it do for me?

More specifically, I've been advised that a CMS system for my static site can provide many of the advantages of a WP blog. "Search engines love CMS" or so I'm told.

Elxis, for example, even has a blog feature within it.

Everything new has a big learning curve and requires investment in time, money or both. I've been working to learn Wordpress lately and I'm not loving it. Is CMS worth my time or is it a red herring?

Any suggestions or insights will be appreciated!

Hi David,

A CMS (content management system) allows specified user(s) to edit content (or more, such as creating pages) on a web site, typically using an administration web based interface.

It tends to keep users away from the underlying code and functionality of the web site itself, and instead lets them edit the web site's content, images etc.

There are lots of CMS packages around, and Wordpress is highly regarded, given its somewhat quick and easy nature to get set up (many web hosts have options within their control panels to let you "one click" install Wordpress), and that blog posts etc. done via Wordpress tend to be indexed by Google relatively quickly (personally I've had blog posts indexed within about 30 minutes). For me, this is the biggest advantage - the plugins also allow you to make your Wordpress site search engine friendly.

Of course, there are downsides to a CMS. You'll quickly hit limitations in terms of what you can and cannot do - so if you're experienced and comfortable enough with creating your own web pages in HTML, CSS etc, then you may wish to continue on that route.

I've only really covered the basics, but I'd say give Wordpress a try and see whether it benefits you.

I agree. Wordpress is the way to go, especially if your just starting out. Wordpress is so much easier to use compared to Joomla and it has a lot more free plugins. I'have a site running on Joomla and it's pain in the a..s compared to wp.

If you build a site for someone I would always recommend WP. Anybody can learn to edit their pages quickly.

I can't imagine anything better than Wordpress.
When I started with Wordpress, I was a little frustrated because there
was too much to learn (and I didn't have the time right then). I consider myself a (semi-) expert now.
Good knowledge of HTML and CSS (and basic knowledge of PHP) are a big help as well, especially if you wanna tweak the theme to your needs.

Hi,

A Content Mangement System is precisely that, it lets you manage regularily updated content (which search engines and visitors like).

Yes it is worth learning but only if you have content to publish.

It is not only for 'noobs', it is for busy webmasters too - I personally use Joomla, Wordpress and Contepass for my business - each has it's strong points and weak points.
