Is limiting the # of member a good thing?

Hi,

I'm working on a internet marketing membership site for newbies and wonder if it would be a good thing to limit the number of people who can join and then close it for new signups. This way I can focus more in actually helping my members instead of marketing the site all the time to bring in new members.

What is your stake at this and if you would limit it, then what would you suggest? 500? 1000? ( think more is pretty hard to handle)

Thanks,

Nico

If you will be working with each member then it is usually a good idea to limit the number of members to a level you know you can manage. What you're talking about is essentially customer service, and bad customer service leads to less revenue.

Another method you could use is to set the price at a level (and possible change it often, or as needed) that keeps the signups to a reasonable number. Remember that the higher the demand, the higher the price can be for a product with limited availability.

      Nico,

If your membership site is targeted to newbies, won't that automatically create turnover within the ranks of your members?

Those who have been with you for awhile will "graduate" (if you've done a good job in teaching them) out of the newbie class and move on, thereby opening up new slots for members. Same thing with "churn" - the turnover of members who leave your site after a month or two - you're going to have to replace them like most all membership sites have to do.

Unless you have a hugely popular site, I think you ought to plan on constantly seeking new members.

The best to you in your quest,

      Steve

Limiting anything is always great for scarcity and to get people to take action they may otherwise have not taken. But just be sure if you do use scarcity that you follow through with it. If you say only 500 people can join then close it down after the 500.

For a site like this you might want to limit it to say only 50-100 new members per month. That way it stays exclusive and you can grow the community slowly over time.
