How do I speed up my Macbook Pro?

Hi Warriors,

Have had my MacBook Pro for three years now. I've done some video editing and do lots of freelance writing on it and I've noticed that over the last few months, as soon as the cooling fan inside the computer turns on, the computer gets a lot smaller and my mouse turns into the "rainbow wheel of death" a lot, even if I'm just browsing the web with one tab open or just doing simple word processing.

I gather that deleting some stuff, using Time Machine to boot the system back to a previous date and maybe just reformatting and erasing the hard disk and starting over would probably work, BUT...

I was wondering if there's any application that comes with the system or anything free I could download and run that might help speed things up. I'm going to be spending prolonged hours writing on the computer starting next month and I need to go back to the time when my computer did things FAST

Thanks for any feedback friends!

First thing that comes in my mind is "repair disk permissions"
You can do it in disk utilities.
Second is to download ccleaner for mac and clean up some cookies and other stuff plu you can actually do the "repair disk permissions" there too..
    Hope it helps

You might want to invest in a laptop cooler, that might help with the heating issues when doing video editing or other CPU intensive operations. If you do decide to go with a reformat then I'd suggest getting a solid state drive(SSD). They're actually a reasonable price now and they really do speed the system up significantly over the stock hard drive included with the macbooks.

I don't know anything about changing to an SSD drive, would an Apple store do that for me?

Why not give your local Apple store a call?
They could have solved your problem a week ago...

What you want to do is go buy more RAM for it. Should be an incredibly cheap and simple way to get up to 2X faster speeds.

My 2009 Laptop runs photoshop, dreamweaver and illustrator all at the same time with no issue using 8GB of RAM and I have a 1TB hard drive installed!
