Facebook Fan Pages and Local businesses

Is it worth while for a local business to have a FB Fan Page? I am wondering how much LOCAL traffic would be able to garner from having such a page?

Yes, ofcourse it is. It's not so much the amount of local traffic they might be able to attract, it's the fact their current customers and supporters can become a fan of their page and can then be informed of news, special offers and promotions, thus driving those people back into the business over and over again. And as those fans interact with the page, their friends are able to see that interaction and so the number of fans grows organically over time.

It's absolutely important to have a presence on the most popular social networking site.

So this is not a method of driving new business into the store, initially then? But it should over time I guess.

I love it when local business have Facebook pages that are informational and share really current news.

For example, if a restaurant I go to posts that they've got a great special one night, I'll be tempted to head on over there for dinner.

Is Friday night Karaoke night? Remind people by updating your status every Friday.

Have you added a new menu item? Let us know!

Things like that will really keep your customers coming back for more!

It depends. If you setup a Facebook ad campaign then most definitely you can drive new fans to the page which results in more customers in the business.

Just 2 weeks ago I did a campaign for a friend of mine who owns a local bar. I got him 400 new fans in about 4 days and for just over $100. He said a number of people came in that week saying they had seen the posts on Facebook and wanted to check it out. It resulted in more business almost instantly. Plus those 400 people are now getting all the updates, news and announcements driving them into the bar over time.

So yes, Facebook marketing can be very beneficial.

Same with me. If I want to eat somewhere, I check their Facebook fan page first for some information and will even read some of the members' posts to get some reviews.

I completely agree with WillR, it definitely makes sens to have a fan page... and as he says when people become a fan, friends of them will see it in the newsfeed and might also check out the page and become a fan... this goes viral very fast, even with "local" people...
And there is always the chance to buy a gig at fiverr for $5 to get some more fans... but not sure if they can do it locally....

A bit of psychology - or how an average internet user sees things..

If something's not on the internet, then it a) isn't good/real/worth; b) doesn't exist. Lately (and I'd say - unfortunately) internet = social media.

So, no matter of the popularity of the fan page, it is always a good choice to create one.

I have used those gigs before. I would only use the fivver gigs to start off a fanpage. Getting a fanpage started is always the hardest part since no one wants to like something that has no fans. So I would usually order a gig of 50 likes or so just to give the fanpage some social proof and help encourage others to like it.
