The Art of War and Internet Marketing?

I'm surprised there aren't responses to this thread yet.

This is my absolute favorite book. I've read it many times, and each time I revisit it, I find something new and applicable to just about any field or arena.

Have you ever seen the History Channel's several installment documentary on it?


(This YouTube videos appears to consolidate it all into one video. Other YouTube videos have it in "parts", where you have to go to another video after you finish watching each installment.)

Thanks for the video... and I totally agree... this one book is applicable in just about every area of life.

Even when I'm getting home at night from the gym... I'll sneak into the house and launch a surprise attack on my wife and scare the living daylights out of her :-)

but seriously though, I remember that one of my mentors, Gary Bencivenga, mentioned in his seminar that "every battle is won before it's ever fought"

He was talking about being prepared before he wrote copy... and that often times he beat out other writers simply by researching more and being better prepared.

The Art Of War by Sun Tzu is one of my favorite books as well. So is The Book Of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi. There are definitely many lessons that can be applied to one's own life and to business as well.

This is true and it's actually a very good tip. I know more than a couple of marketers who specialize in this, one of them does very well in Clickbank by doing just this one thing; exploiting weaknesses in another's marketing.

About a decade ago a very successful marketer who was also a Warrior advised me to stay out of the dating niche, because he had tried it and he did not do well in it. He was kind enough to answer my questions on exactly what approach he took and how he planned on monetizing that niche.

When he shared what he did, I began asking more questions like:

"Why did you try XYZ?"

He got frustrated with me and assured me that it would be a waste of my time if I went into the dating advice for men niche.

So I decided to do some research; okay, a TON of research. I researched what I thought were the top 10 competitors in that niche, using keyword tools (there weren't that many back then as there are today). And during my market research I began to notice weaknesses in some of their marketing.

For example:

Some of these guys only had 7 to 10 follow up e-mails in their autoresponder series and they only promoted their own products.


So I experimented and sent out one e-mail per week for up to a year. That worked so well that I went ahead and created 3 years worth of autoreponder content. Every e-mail had a resource box and I never sent out an email solely as a promotion, it was always mixed in with relevant content. It sent my conversions through the roof.

I also noticed another competitor who didn't use press releases. So I started experimenting with them, learning how to write them, and learning how to submit them using certain services like PRWeb and Webwire.

Another huge key to competiting with the big boys was learning how to write salescopy. I had already written sales copy in the offline line world so I began studying copywriting specifically for the online world. After a lot of testing and tracking, I figured out a style of copywriting that worked extremely well in that niche.

So yes, there are plenty of applications that these books have in today's business environment.

Yes, I've read it several times. Great book that is often given to corporate proteges, cops, soldiers, and philosophers.

The 48 Laws Of Power is very good too, as is The Book Of 5 Rings as Rod suggested. I find that a lot of Philosophy books are very relevant to life and business. Heck, even The Prince, by Niccolo Machiavelli is very relevant to the business environment.

I've read it at least a hundred times over the years...yes a hundred.

I mean, the beauty of that book is that it applies to everything... including IM.

I've watched quite a few documentaries in my day, and that has to be one of my favorites.

art of war definetly has wisdom for IM. 'best way to win is to avoid a fight'.

I have Art of War sitting on my night stand and I still haven't read it yet! This thread motivates me to sit down and read through it because I have wanted to for the past couple of years.

If you like the Art of War I also recommend reading The Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu. It has very similar qualities to the Art of War but is more of a philosophical perspective on life.
