Compound anchor text keywords

Hi, all!

I'm new both to the forum and to internet marketing.

I'm trying to get the most bang for my buck when it comes to keywords, but I've read conflicting information on the internet regarding keywords.

It seems to me that making a compound keyword for my anchor text should double the effectiveness of my link. For example:

"unique gift ideas" should grab both "unique gift" and "gift ideas," in addition to the full 3-word phrase. Can I safely believe that I will be able to capture searches for all three of these phrases by using the compound phrase as my anchor text for a link?

I've heard that the answer is yes, but that search engines may ding me on relevance, because if someone only types in "gift ideas," I'll only have 2/3rds relevance.

Can anyone provide some insight on this?

Thanks for your input!
