How to write an Article - 18 Tips and 12 example articles

The best way to learn to write articles is to learn the basics and then start doing it, a lot. You might also consider becoming a writer at iWriter or ineedanarticle. That way you get paid while you learn and practice.

The best way to learn how to write articles is to read as many articles as you can. Read several a day. Go to EzineArticles or another article directory and read articles on different topics. Pay attention to sentence structure and how topics are organized.

Practice writing your own articles first. Just pick any topic and challenge yourself to write 400 words about it. Set up a free blog at blogger or wordpress and publish your articles there.

I don't recommend signing up with an article writing site until you have practiced writing and get the hang of it. If you get bad ratings at iWriter or other sites they can ban your account.

Just start practicing how to write articles by actually writing. That's how most people learn to do it.

    Good luck

I agree completely, practice and build your confidence before signing up for a writing site. Some clients will expect perfection even if they are not paying very much.
Pick a subject or niche that you are interested in and write a few articles for a blog. You'll soon build your confidence. A subscription to Grammarly may help.

Search this forum for posts by Alexa Smith. Look for the link in her signature(at the bottom of any post) How To Write An Article. Her writing should help you immensely.

First of all, you would have to have a go at it and simply try writing and see if this is your cup of tea. Also, reading a lot helps. But, mostly, it matters if you see yourself doing this, being able to present information in an interesting, not boring, kind of manner.

In my humble opinion, there is no one way to write an article. If there were, how boring reading would be.

What if everyone wrote articles like, the three things, the five methods, the seven whatevers...(yawn)

I agree with reading as a way to learn, this way you can discover multiple styles of writing. Over time, you will discover a writing style that you like above others. When you do, that usually is an indication of your own writing style and voice. Although you don't have to have just one. Different topics call for different styles like technical writing varies from creative writing, which varies from journalistic reporting which varies from thought provoking and emotion pulling pieces.

But don't stop there. You need to practice writing. Write about anything and everything. I may be in the minority, but I love writing and have since I was a kid. I couldn't find enough things to write about. I would see a cute little puppy or kitty and I would make up a story about it. Once I even took a sale flyer and wrote a story about everything listed in it, in order, lol!

Anyway, reading and practicing writing are your best ways to learn.

Check out websites dedicated to writing:
    - Copyblogger.com
    - Writer's digest (offers tips and courses from time to time); they also have a writing prompt thread.
    - lousywriter.com (basic grammar review)

Practice makes perfect. You might want to consider starting a free blog so you have a place to publish and ask for critique.

There are a number of free style guides with regards to writing for the web - have a good look through them and apply that information. However, most recommend the Yahoo Style Guide.

There are a number of free blog posts by sites like copyblogger.com and problogger.com on how to write a great article- again, read and apply.

“If you don't have time to read, you don't have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that.”
    ― Stephen King

I think the best way to go as others said is to read a lot about your selected topic or about writing itself. I recently came across this book and found very helpful in my endeavors to get better at writing:

Write Is a Verb: Sit Down, Start Writing, No...Write Is a Verb: Sit Down, Start Writing, No...
and also Accidental Genius by Mark levy on free writing.

    As DeborahDera mentioned

Copyblogger is good site to get in touch with the nitty gritty of writing.
Another one is fizzle.co (they have courses-monthly membership on different topics like choosing right audience, writing content by Leo Babauta of zenhebits.net and many more). You can check out yourself, $1 for first month and then $35 a month.

It is amazing how long it takes to complete something you are not working on.

    R.D. Clyde

At the end read a lot and write a lot. Only practice can make you better. You have to find your own writing style and it can only be done by start writing

“There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.”
    ― Ernest Hemingway

don't read just all the articles - no!
read & study only bestselling books,
    famous writers articles
    &
    learn only from them
e.g., Travis McGee, Harold Robbins, etc

besides, these bestselling authors also write a lot about their secrets & tips
    so, read their advice

always learn only from the best

I'm not sure I'd advise someone just starting out to use the postings on EZA as models to study. There's still way to much crap on there, and way too much generic keyword pablum.

Better to spend time reading the online versions of print publications, as well as top bloggers on a variety of subjects. And don't forget fiction. Reading good fiction in a variety of genres will also teach quite a bit on how different writers "sound" on paper.

Another free resource is actually Amazon's Kindle marketplace. Play with the search bar until your searches bring up the kind of material you're looking for, such as style guides, article writing manuals, etc. Change the sort from "Relevant" to "Price - Low to High", then look for ebooks with multiple good reviews being offered on a free promo day.

I second this idea. Use the free blog as a laboratory, where you experiment with different article styles and lengths. You can try out different voices. Have some fun with it.

It's like the old joke about getting to Carnegie Hall.

Tourist: Excuse me, can you tell me how to get to Carnegie Hall?

      Local: Practice, practice, practice...

    Yoda can answer this one.

"Do, or Do Not. There is no try."

I second the person up there who said check out Alexa's training on how to write articles. But really, until you start doing it and getting feedback, it's all just theory. Write Write Write Write Write until you get it right.

Try a site like iWriter where you don't have to place bids or compete for work - you just have to be quick enough to snap up a job, then actually execute the job. There's a chance your work will be rejected, but if it is you can always ask for reasons why (so you can improve). If it's not, you can take the ratings / feedback given and improve on what needs it. The more you write the better you get at it.

First of all, not everyone can be a good writer. That is just the facts. I write for a living and I have many friends that would love to do this but they simply cannot do it. You should practice writing every single day. The more you write the better you will get.

I find the best way to write an essay is to first write a numbered list of what you want to include in the essay. After you have your list you them put it all together using normal sentences. Generally, you need an introduction, a middle bit,and a conclusion/summary. Diagrams and pictures are also useful in help to explain a points. Often it can be useful to get the diagrams done first then everything will flow from there. The introduction is often written last.

PS I appreciate your thirst for knowledge.

One of my favorite books is Strunk and White's Elements of Style.
This is not the place to start if you want to quickly learn some tricks for publishing online content. It is a timeless book that will help you become a better writer.

Along with reading other blog post, also start writing as well. However, don't copy the specific style that you read, learn to find your own voice. The best way to get better is just to keep on writing, and if you find that you have writers' block, just keep on writing. This will continuously get you into the habit of writing. And over time, you'll get better.

Lastly, try to write everyday. Similar to what Fun To Write said, try and write 400 words, and when you get more comfortable, try and increase that to 450 and then 500. The more you write, and also READ other people's writing, the better you'll be.
