Can I blog using Wordpress.com to get comfortable writing and publishing?

To get over my inferiority complex that my writing is not up to the standard American (since English is not my first language) or British English, I am planning to publish what I have written in my note book at the rate of one per day at www.mysite.wordpress.com.

Question:

1. Will Google index my blog posts or will it not index from FREE platforms?
2. Can I have a opt-in form at my wordpress.com site for people to subscribe to my list?

Once, I have published enough articles and feel comfortable, I will find someone who is a good proofreader to edit my stuff and convert into an kindle ebook. Is this okay?

Thanks.

    Thanks.

    Peter,

Your writing is better than 90% of the "professional" content writers. From what I've seen, you're equipped just fine to get into the freelance writing arena.

No need to have an inferiority complex.

That being said, if you want to get more comfortable, then sure, build a wordpress.com site. Although writing one quality blog post per day may get a bit stressful.

    Cheers,

I believe the #1 google search on home business is just a simple free blog and I am sure the guy is raking in the cash with advertising...

HELP NEEDED! My Mother And Her Brother have been taking care of the mother with the help of Hospice. He just had a Massive Heart Attack while taking a short vacation. My mother had to go to Florida from Indiana to be with her brother and is not financially stable from being off work to be with grandma. Any Help Would Be Appreciated. http://www.gofundme.com/vg5kt4c

Sorry Jeff, can you be more clear? I don't understand what you said here. I did a search on "home business" and nothing turns up using FREE platforms on the first page.

Thank you Daryl. I have already written some articles in my note book and typed on the computer and residing in my PC.

I am writing at least 500 word article every day now. But, not sure if people want to read mine! Earlier in April, when I showed a sample here and asked people to critique, some people said it was boring but good content.

Therefore, I am learning to improve my writing to not be boring and I don't think I have found success yet!

I am continuing to work hard every day.

      Thanks.
I would NEVER go the free blog route myself. My problem with this type of blog, I don't truly own it. My recommendation, buy your name .com or some other domain and pay the few bucks a month for hosting. Set up wordpress with a nice theme (you can find them free of charge) and use it as your blog.

You won't have to worry about what you can and cannot do, since you will be the one that sets the rules.

For some, one blog post a day can be stressful. However, if you can find a time in your day (15-30 minutes) and just write, you will find it's easier than it might sound.

    Hey mate,

Check out Tumblr instead of WP.com. It's far simpler to use, and if you use the proper tags, you'll attract a following right away (pictures really help). Once you've outgrown it, then you can move on to a proper CMS like WP.

BTW, your English is quite good, better than most Americans that I know!

Tumblr is more for pics. Sure, some people write on there, but most people don't read it. Most tumblr users only look at other tumblr-blogs to take ("repost") content relevant to their own.

Plus, moving content that has already been created from tumblr to a self hosted wordpress blog (in the future) is more difficult than moving content from a wordpress.com blog.

Some cause-oriented hackers recently hacked one of my websites. So I researched what they're about and then donated a large sum of money to the entity they hate the most.

The next time they hack one of my websites I'm going to donate DOUBLE.

      Your plan is fine.

If you really want to learn to make articles and such more interesting, start a second blog under a pen name and write short pieces of fiction. Join a few writer's groups and ask for feedback.

I say "join a few" because all groups are not created equal. Some are excellent, others are filled with wannabe writers with delusions of grandeur, seeing themselves as literary artistes who look down on common storytellers. Those groups will waste your time.

By the way, your English is fine. Learn to tell stories with that English and your article writing will be even better.

Thank you John for your encouragement. I don't know how to write fiction or may be I truly don't understand the meaning of fiction.

I am still struggling to learn to write without boring people. Since I have knowledge in the topics, I give facts straight. I hope with practice and reading newyork times, I will get better. (See when I typed this from my iPhone at lunch break, I was not sure if I should use the comma or not in the previous sentence.)

          The comma is good.

By fiction, I just mean to learn the elements of telling a good story. Reading the NY Times is good if you want to be a better reporter. If you want to write better (as in more interesting, more engaging) articles, start reading the columns and the feature pieces (like in the Lifestyle sections) where the writers get to go beyond straight news reporting.

[You can download a copy of "Elements of StyleElements of Style ", one of the best little books out there on grammar and punctuation, free from Amazon's Kindle marketplace. They also offer free apps for most phones, including the iPhone.]

Got it, John. I will read lifestyle section and simply practice writing every day for at least 30 minutes.

I will check at my local library for that book. I have to get back to work now!

I figured out when I typed the previous sentence that I need a person that I a accountable to, so that I won't get distracted and do my tasks that will provide value to my visitors and make money fore too.

Honestly, I think that the best thing to do is to read blogs by people with a little flair. Have a look at beafreelanceblogger.com, I really think that there's some great stuff there and Sophie's style is pretty interesting. Have a look at some of the other "radical" bloggers like Ash Ambirge of the Middle Finger Project, the Bloggess, and other people who aren't afraid to inject some personality into their writing.

I'd advise against copying them, but certainly you can learn a few tips on how to make a dull subject more interesting.

    Hi Peter,

Your writing seems great. Better than a lot of English people who I know!! And the fact that you're willing to put in the time to practice will make it even better.

I'd advise using WP. I started off with the hosted .com option, then ended up moving over to the self-hosted .org as I needed more flexibility. All in all, it's fairly easy to use unless you're wanting to get really technical.

The only problem that I found with the .com version is that it didn't allow an Aweber opt-in form to be added. That was why I chose to switch over to the .org. Not sure if this applies to other email providers, though you might want to look into it before you get started.

    Good luck with your writing!

Yes you can. But why not invest a few bucks and buy your own domain and a cheap hosting account. Then just install Wordpress self-hosted.

That way you avoid the problem of outgrowing Wordpress.com and having to migrate over to your own domain in the future.

My only concern with this plan is that you are preparing to use a free blog platform to eventually create a list and sell a product. I'm not 100% sure how that will fly with Wordpress.com. I think you'd still be better off buying your own domain and hosting, if you can afford it. It will help with your credibility when you're ready to sell that book.
