Am I in the right place for advice

I don't want to sound like a jerk here but let me explain, 4 times in the last 3 years I have asked people to look at my website and instantly I have 25 to 30 people telling me everything under the sun as to why it doesn't look very good.

Each time I have re done my site and then the same people says it now looks good. Then 6 months go by and I ask people the same thing because my conversion rate hasn't gone up and again I get the same thing, the site looks old fashioned, the site looks un professional as well as other things but are the same comments as the first group of people said.

But how could I get the same comments after the first group of people said the site looked good after making all the changes they recommended. So as I said I have done this 4 times, so 4 or 5 days ago I asked another question because I found a site that was highlighting what they thought was some of the best travel sites on the internet.

I looked them over and they do look great but are missing many of the things I was always told was needed in a good site. So what I did was ask the question what makes these 2 sites so well designed.

So what happened I got about 48 views and no comments what so ever, so here it where not wanting to sound a jerk comes in, why does it seem there are so many people who think they know what they are doing and can tell people what is wrong with there site but no one seems to be able to tell me what makes these 2 sites so well designed.

Wouldn't the same skills come into play for both knowing what isn't good and knowing what is good. Shouldn't the people who say a site isn't good also know why a site is good. With that in mind where are all the comments?

      Marks2424,

You have to understand that in a public forum you are going to get a wide variety of opinions including those given by people who like to see their name in print who have very little or no basis for their comments.

WC Fields once said, "Opinions are like a**holes, everyone has one!"

A second point to understand is that sometimes in Internet marketing what is fashionable at one moment becomes out of fashion later. The underlying principles of good business are pretty constant, but tactics, methods, and practices go in and out of style to some degree. So it is not always surprising when what looks professional to one person may not get that same reaction at another time or by another person.

I think the best you can do is to be very careful who you listen to and follow. Take the advice of the true professionals that have "walked the walk" and know through personal experience what works best for them.

You can't listen to everything said on a public forum and expect to always come away with your questions answered intelligently.

Good luck with your IM career.

thanks Steve B but how do you know if someone has walked the walk. Also sites like travelocity, expedia, and priceline haven't changed there sites looks in well over 5 years, I know this to be true because I have looked at them all for a very long time while looking for things while booking my trips. However all the above sites are really only booking sites and they give very little if any information. Also I do know that everyone has an opinion but still how can 40 people give me advice and I change my site based on that and then they say looks great now and as I said 6 months a different group of people say the same thing the first group said. I would think old fashioned and out dated would seem that way to very many people. Not just various groups. Anyhow I still check the thread where I asked people what makes these 2 sites so well designed and I still have no answers. And again like I said wouldn't the same people who keep telling others why a site looks bad also be able to tell why a site looks good. Although now that I think about it no one has every really told me why my site looks bad they just say it looks old fashioned, or unprofessional and still never say what makes it look that way to them.

      Marks2424,

Here are a couple of thoughts...

First, you mentioned Travelocity, Priceline, and Expedia. Those are huge travel sites, some of the largest and most popular sites online. Are you sure it's in your best interest to compete with, or compare your site to these giants?

Think about it, who is a traveler looking to book a trip going to trust with their reservations? You and your tiny, low traffic, "new kid on the block" site? Or one of the well-established, well-known giants in the field? Not to be critical, but who's going to win that battle every time?

      You said:

"Then 6 months go by and I ask people the same thing because my conversion rate hasn't gone up"

Understand that there are many variables that affect conversion rates other than site design including the source of the traffic, the keywords used, your sales copy, the offer itself, pricing, competition, etc. You should be testing as many variables as you can, one at a time, to see if you can increase your conversions.

"I still check the thread where I asked people what makes these 2 sites so well designed and I still have no answers"

"wouldn't the same people who keep telling others why a site looks bad also be able to tell why a site looks good"

People in forums may think you're simply trying to spam them with your links if you ask "what's right with my design?" I don't know for sure, but I think some folks don't want to take the time to confirm that your site is well designed.

Also, what you're asking is pretty general in nature. Usually specific questions which can be answered in a short, brief post will get more and better responses than if you ask something like "tell me everything I'm doing right with my site design." Does that make sense? Folks are quick to critique and give a quick opinion about something they see that's wrong, but your question is pretty open ended and most people would see it as to broad to even attempt to answer. If they already like your site, they may not want to take the time to respond as opposed to jumping on the chance to tell you what's wrong.

These are just some thoughts I have about what you're trying to do. I think you should take a hard look at what has been successful for you so far and question whether continuing to do it makes sense. There are so many ways to make money online - if one doesn't work, you might consider re-evaluating what you're doing and research your way to a new approach.

      The very best to you,

      Steve

  • Hey Mark,

    I feel your pain man.
With all due respect to my fellow warriors, but you really gotta take the feedback you get here with a grain of salt. You're better of getting the feedback of your actual users. Here's how.

    1. Assuming you actually have some decent traffic coming to your site, I would say try services like crazyegg.com where you can see heat maps of where people are clicking on yoursite. You can quickly and easily see if the changes you make are correct because you'll see if people are clicking on the things you want or don't.

    2. Another thing you may want to try is usertesting.com where you can hire real people to navigate around your website and ask them to perform certain task. These folks are recorded as they go through your site and required to provide feedback as they do the task. You'll be amazed what you find when you do a few of these. You can literally see and hear what real people are experiencing as they go through your site trying to perform the tasks you have defined. It's very enlightning. It's a bit pricey but so is driving traffic to a website that isn't making you money!

Both options will give you a true reflection of what you should do for your website. Listening to a bunch of random warriors that have varied experience or none at all maybe more of an exercise in futility as you clearly have experienced.

Hope this helps man! Don't let it frustrate you. Keep taking action, testing and focus on the actual numbers and adjust accordingly.

You have to understand that people are going to hate your design no matter how good your site looks. Stop worrying about what other people think and just take action! Many marketers have made tons of cash with ugly looking websites.

Don't worry about what others think!

      Can we see your site?
Not all recommendation made are genuine,You need to filter and identify some genuine advices then have time to review and decide which to implement on your site.
Otherwise you will end up changing a million times and if you still pose the same question you will still get the same responses.
      All the best

Every member is different in a forum and they will have different opinions. You should look take those opinions positively. Make the changes by asking to those people who says that your site have problems (If you actually feel that can be a problem). You can never satisfy people. Be satisfied yourself.

Everybody is different and it's impossible to create a site that everybody likes. The problem with asking people to critique your site is they are looking for something wrong. You will be better feedback by surveying customers about specific parts of your site.

It's important that the site represents you and your product. If you accomplish this, you will attract the right people. Anytime you ask for opinions of others, they will tell you how they would do it. Their opinion may not be wrong, but it's not necessarily right for you, either.

Mark, what kind of input you were looking for ? did you asked specific questions ? There are many usability testing sites like fivesecondtest which you can use for more specific reviews about user interface, There are 3-4 such sites (I am not able to remember all urls) where you can get detailed free reviews including form designers

I am not sure what you are looking for... If you are asking the same questions and getting the same answers from the same audience and getting the same unsatisfactory results then you should choose a different audience who are having the results you want or consult an expert.

See, sometime others are not giving the complete recipe or some of the ingredients are simply missing unintentionally... I have unknowingly followed a messed up recipe and got messed up results!

If you will ask the same question to one thousand Warriors you may have one thousand different answers.

Different people belong to different personality types; they have different knowledge, different experiences, and different opinions. You cannot act based on other people’s opinions.

You have to study what you want to learn. Then, you should take from the answers you have from others the answers that seem to be the best ones according to your personal judgment.

thanks for all your input but one problem I always seem to have and I am not saying everyone does it but for example but I wonder if Steve B really read my comment because no where in my comment did I ever compare my site to the very big travel sites I said none of them have changed the look of there sites in well over 5 years. I also said the big travel sites aren't really travel sites but booking sites where you go to make all your reservations because none of them really give any information about anything. Another thing Steve B said was that maybe people didn't want to answer my last question because maybe people thought I was just trying to spam them with my links but what links the 3 questions I wasn't even asking about my site and there weren't any links to my site anywhere or links to anyone else's site.

And lastly I still haven't gotten any response to my question about want makes these 2 sites so well designed 50 views and no answers. Also as far as my site I understand what many of you are saying about different people having different opinions but I still find it hard to figure that 4 different times different groups said my site looked old fashioned and some said looked unprofessional and each of the first 3 times after making the changes that was suggested they all said it looks fine now so I still don't understand how there could be so many different opinions of what old fashioned is and unprofessional is.

    marks2424,

Your unanswered thread is unanswered because we, Warrior Forum members, did not tell you the top travel sites were well designed. If we did not give you that opinion we cannot explain why they are well designed. Does this make sense?

If someone told you the top travel sites are well designed then you need to go back to ask them the question instead of opening a new thread. I saw your thread and read it but didn't answer for this reason.

Let's talk about this thread. I'm going to warn you that I'm going to be a bit harsh here. You are focusing on the wrong thing right now. Forget what people have said about your site in the past. Don't waste time answering this thread and moaning that you got different opinions from different people.

The only opinion that matters is the opinion of the people who visit your site with the intention of doing business with you. You need to ask them for their opinion. I don't know how to do this technically but could you trigger an exit popup when someone leaves your site without buying something? The popup could ask them for feedback on why they are leaving.

Right now you need to figure out how to get your website (and business) make money for you. Dwelling on the past is merely a distraction that is keeping you from moving ahead.
