The Biggest Mistake In Marketing

I've been finding a current trend with a lot of products, websites and blogs.

A lot of people get started right away trying to figure out: how do i get traffic? What social media should I use? What product should I create?

Instead of:

What's my ideal audience?

You should begin there if you are doing any kind of marketing online.

Imagine your ideal customer sitting in front of you.

What are her desires, fears, ambitions, and struggles?

Write and create products for her.

And she'll love you.

Excellent point Dain. Market research is definitely the way to start off in any niche you go into. If a person does a thorough job at this step then a lot of the other things such as where do I get traffic, how do I create compelling content/sales copy, and what do I sell them comes much easier since you've already identified these key characteristics of your customer. I remember when going through Ed Dales 30 day challenge he always stressed the importance of market research and would state that one of the biggest reasons people fail is that they don't do adequate market research. Timely advice back then and now.

    Jon.

I agree Dain, it's like getting into a niche but that niche is either not interesting or too competitive. You have to know in what niche you going into.

Also great advice Andrew. I've found that long tail keywords really help bring out a lot of useful terms to try to rank for. A trick my partner taught me that I had no idea about before.

    hey Dain

This is also the biggest copywriting mistake.

I tell all my students to learn how to connect with their audience, whether they're writing sales letters to sell a product, or create mini sites to build "affiliate" blogs

The written word is like imagination. Stir it in the right direction, and you're going to repeat the benefits.

I think the biggest problem in marketing is lack of commitment or information overload. But apart from being nit-picky I agree completely. Always put yourself in the shoes of the person that you're trying to sell too.

If you haven't been in their position then it can help to find a potential customer and interview them.

You're right and it comes under ancient rule of almost any business I can think of:
    Know your customer.
And if you miss this, you'll never be successful enough. At best and with lots of luck you'll be average.

    All the best,

    Veo

    Hi Dain,

Great post. I find myself telling people this over and over again. If you can work out exactly who you're marketing to, you're halfway there. It's one of the main tools I use when it comes to crafting copy, developing marketing plans, and so many other online activities.

An example I often use is a personal trainer looking for new clients. If they try to market to 'people who want to lose weight', they'll find it difficult to stand out from the crowd. If they decide though to focus on recent mothers who are trying to lose their baby weight, it becomes much more targeted. They can unearth their fears, worries, and problems, such as a lack of time, changing bodies, etc, etc. It's always useful to try to narrow it down to one specific person (whether that's a real life example of one of your customers, or just a hypothetical example) and brainstorm from there.

Thanks for sharing, I'm sure this is something that almost everyone in online marketing can find valuable from if they put it into action.

People do know what's the audience they're targeting, as well as their fears/needs/desires. That is not the problem...

The problem is that most people do not have anything worth offering to that target audience as an actual solution to their fears/needs/desires. Now THAT is why most people usually fail online.

In my humble opinion, finding good products (or creating them) is relatively easy once you're solved the "who is my audience and where can they be found" puzzle.

In my experience Dain is right . . . it all starts with identifying an audience that has money to spend, knowing where they can be found in groups online, and understanding their common problems or what they want or need.

As has been said over and over by top marketers, "it's much easier to find solutions than to identify problems."

The very best to all of you,

      Steve

        Hey Steve,

Can you or anyone else share the steps involved as to how these groups can be found?

          Quantumtiger,

I will offer a few examples of how or where to do marketing research.

One method is to do online search for "your keyword" + blogs."

          Do a competitor analysis.

Research what forums and social media platforms your idea clients are using.

Here are some important questions you will NEED answers to become successful in your business:
          • Who are the target customers? What is their life or business like.
          • What do they want? What's the pain?
          • What are their needs that aren't being met?
It is possible in the beginning to make some assumptions, as long as you are using a lean start up method. Eventually you will need to survey your actual customers. You can also do survey from forums or social media before you design and launch.

Creating customer profiles/personas is vital !!

Each of these methods will require research and learning how to do each step. I hope I have answered your question and that it has been helpful to you and others who find this thread.

          I wish you well,

People are doing things in the wrong order. You do not find your audience by getting traffic; you get your traffic by finding your audience.

Absolutely, there should be a new thread "Is Internet Marketing Turning Backwards"Without an Ideal customer, what good is traffic? You can have all the traffic in the world but if it doesn't relate to a target audience, its worthless.
