A magazine sample of your blog to reach new markets?

Hey everyone,

I'm wondering if anyone has put out a magazine type of file with their best posts as a marketing tool for their blog?

I was thinking of doing something seasonally (Best of Spring, Summer, Fall, etc.)
About 15 pages.

Is this a good idea and where would I put my magazine to draw additional readers to the site?

I appreciate your help, thanks folks! I'm not sure if I should keep working on this or move on with another plan I have and scrap this whole idea. Please advise?

Adrian

The idea itself sounds good. I'm a firm believer in putting your best content in front of the people who want that type of content.

Your second question (where to put the file, probably a pdf) is the linchpin to making it work.

Spend some research time building a list of places that will allow you to offer your sample mag before you put a bunch of hours into building the file itself.

The doc sharing sites (docstoc, and its kin) are one idea. Allowing people to give it away on their sites as a freebie, product bonus, etc. is another.

I'm sure there will be more ideas, but the big takeaway is: figure out where you want to put it before you spend time choosing and formatting, etc.

Good advice, thanks John. I made the first 4 pages as a test to see if I possess the skills and tools to make a 15 page full version, then I stopped.

  • It's a great idea and John has told you a few great ideas (especially getting other bloggers or site owners to give it away for free). You could also put it on Kindle as a free book and market it on Goodreads and Shelfari (especially groups within the two communities), forums in your niche... Mark Cuban has recently release a book on Kindle with posts from his blog (although he charged a few bucks for it), and it was an amazing success.
