Why people hate to share content?

Hey,

I am building a picture site, where people can post their own stuff or just look through awesome stuff other have posted.
What I just did is taking a look into my analytics, and guess what?

About 2100 Users have posted some stuff. But only 130 have shared stuff from others with a social network like Facebook or Twitter.

I just don't get it, what does it take people, to share something on a Social Network?
I mean honestly, what does it take to make YOU share something from me on your Facebook/Twitter Wall?

I 100% understand your problem, I would say it takes time, time for people to except your website as a real website, and not as just a money making nothing.

When I launched my Social Network +1 year ago it took many many months before people start to share things from my website to other websites. But I can tell you the moment it startes I will go faster and faster.

Now I have 180.000+ People a month and everyday I see more links comming in.

So my advice, just have some patience.

Actually now days many people using social network sites and they don't trust other people. they thing its all fake. They use these sites as a time pass. That's why they hesitate or not want to share their own contents.

Yeah, there are thousands of social websites built weekly, people just trying to get a mailing list with them. Just prove yourself to be one of the best social networks and active users will come.

This is what I am trying to do, but I dont really know how to "prove myself as one of the best social networks".

Doesnt everyone try to do exactly this?

I guess it is just patience

I had a classified website offered free advertising to anyone who wanted to sell their wares

Would of thought people would of jump on the opportunity to have another place to sell their goods - wrong

        It was like pulling teeth

My experience you win some lose most on the internet

        Good luck

A few weeks? Count on a few months/years.

I build mine in 3 years and now slowly people start to subscribe and use it more and more. But when it goes, it goes fast.

Site seems to be getting there,

I am not sure what goes on in peoples head, I think possibly it is a trust thing...

Stick around and people will become familiar with your network.

Best of luck in the near future.

Is it a photo based website like Flickr or pix500?

If you tell us what kind of stuff people post up then we can probably elaborate on a solution for you.

I find people share quality/humour/abnormal stuff on social media. Maybe you need more people to post stuff. 130 shares from 2100 is really not bad for a new site.

I'm going to go out on a limb here, and guess that most of those 2100 users who posted stuff were doing it for backlinks. How many of them have posted more than once?

How good is the content posted? Just because there's a bunch of share buttons doesn't mean people will automatically pass them along.

      @allegandro

Didn't you just post your own thread complaining that you couldn't get people to post free links on your site?

Somewhere between there and here, suddenly people are using your site and it's picking up steam?

This site is like Tumblr. People can share fotos, follow others and share videos/texts etc.

If you ask me why I built this site, its just because Tumblr is nearly 99% fotos. I wanted to build something where people share also Links like on Reddit, Fotos like on Pinterest and Texts like on Twitter.

        @JohnMcCabe

About 5% posted more than once, its kinda normal i think for a new social network. Anyhow, maybe you are right about the backlinks...

You need to work on marketing your site and proof to its users that its real and its worth the sharing their stuffs there.
Now days it takes some some time and effort to convince people to accept your site.

        Correct,

The social network is working well, the marketplace is going good, and the photo sharing is going good....

Just when I offer people to add their link to our directory for free, they panic and prefer to pay. ))

People are also getting increasingly wary of the big-name networks so it's even harder for the little ones to get natural shares and traffic. Try and offer incentives for people to interact, like quizzes and competitions. The shares will come in time. Good luck

It takes different things for different people. I had a look at your site and when I scrolled down, I saw this video.

This is something that "I" would share. Why? because it's one of those moments that I expected a quick boring speech, but something much more valuable was delivered to the teen audience. Something "share worthy."

Ye exactly. The content there isn't just all random, its normally well choosen one. So these arguments of the people here in the thread, that "people only share what they like and are congruent about" are to common.

However, I think just one of the biggest problems for people to not share you is the trust problem in front of their own audience.

Isn't it right that if I want to share something on Facebook (for instance) I would ask myself first, if my friends (my audience) wouldn't think its total crap and blame me for that.

... It really seems just like a trust issue ...

Keep at it. It takes time and sometimes people are skeptical and reluctant to share while they'refiguring out if they can trust you... Gently remind them to share.

Also try to take your attention off of them NOT sharing and visualize them sharing instead. They will eventually share as long as you stay around long enough

It has to resonate with me completely. I realize that people want me to share things with my network and I refuse to do that unless I'm convinced that the object in question, as well as its creator, is congruent with my own perspectives. If not...it doesn't get shared. I'm sure other people are the same way.

You are on the right path it takes time. Focus more on marketing your site then focusing on checking the counts of your social network shares

Yeah like other have said. Share worthy content and also make sure the share buttons are positioned correctly and that you prompt them to share. They wont share everything, that's just natural.
