Does design not matter in the IM niche?

I'm just curious as I see some god awful designs and logos on a weekly basis and wonder if it's one of those places that a simple, 1998 design actually helps conversions?

I think design is important, but you should only be spending less than 5% of your time worrying about it. buy or download a free template and learn how to customize it and use it over and over again.

I wouldn't be to sure of that. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Even though the IM industry targets teenagers
For what? And do these marketers use Automatic or Semi-Auto balloon launchers?

I think I just realized I've mistaken "I.M" to mean Internet Messaging? Silly thing to do in a IM forum..

I have a site that has hardly any design (no graphics or anything)
that is my best converter over all my "pretty" sites.

        So it really all depends.

Yeah, I ran a fairly large e-commerce site for years and one of our largest competitors in the PPC arena was a really basic, no graphics site that supposedly made decent bank and ROI.

          This just proves a point.
People have to specify as to what is meant by DESIGN.
To some, good design, simply means cool graphic, nice images and a glossy polished look.

Thats one way of looking at it.

But in reality, GOOD DESIGN means good communication.
So, in Jason's case, the reason his 'basic' site, converts really well, because I can bet that the way it has been created is effective.

I personally didn't do a course on 'design' as such. I did a bachelor on visual communication. If a site communicates well, the graphic will add to the experience.

    Of course design matters.

Design is part of the total package of communication with the prospect.

Sometimes sites convert despite their bad design, in which case a better design would improve conversions. Maybe the offer is killer or you have a starving market and so you make sales just because your market devours any sales message that appears to touch on the topic.

Either way, good design should increase conversions.

"Even though the IM industry targets teenagers, they still want to use a nice looking site."

I have never read or worked with anyone in the "Internet Marketing" niche target teenagers... I don't think thats the major demographic for people getting into this market.

Why do you think this market goes after teenagers? Do you mean "marketing efforts online are targeter to teenagers by big companies like McDonalds, etc etc" or the "make money market"

I just find it interesting you say that...
