Maybe I finally have my motivation - a story by the employed

I work full-time at a really crappy job doing tech support over the phone for computer stuff. I've wanted to "do more" in IM, but really, the motivation hasn't been exceptionally strong because no matter how much I hate the job, the paycheck was OK and came-in on time every two weeks.

But that changed today... Here's the story (WARNING: some adult language and on-purpose mis-spellings):

We had a mandatory meating today about a "policy change" according to the Outlook calendar.

In this wonderful meating, they told us that we're being dropped from exempt salaried to hourly non-exempt status but that means we're still "professionals and valuable to the company" (what B.S.) This, of course, comes with all of the bullshit like having to punch a clock and whatnot. I've not had to punch a clock for the last 15+ years of my career so this is VERY insulting to me.

Then, the whammy. In the conversion from salary to hourly, they came-up with some jacked-up equation to calculate the hourly pay equivalent -- get this:

(current salary + bonus) / 47.5 hours / 52 weeks

Huh?

47.5 hours -- not 40???

Yes, that means that in a normal 40 hour week, I just got rammed up the a$$ with an 18.5% pay cut, assuming my math is correct.

And the bonus? Not worth talking about, so that's effectively a couple percent tops. And,
now we are no longer in the bonus program, so what you make per hour is what you get.

Oh, "but this isn't a budget cutting thing," they say. Then they proceeded to try to coat the turd with sugary icing by saying, "You can work 45 hours per week and keep the same pay."

WHAT!?!?

Forty FIVE hours per week... 1 hour extra every day to KEEP the pay that I took the job for over a year ago??? What part of that should I be happy about?

OK, fine - if people are willing to waste another 5 hours of their life every week answering
the f-ing phone, they can maintain their pay. Surprisingly, many of the losers I work with thought this was OK and didn't see it as a pay cut!!!!

But what about vacation time? Nope, you get the 18.5% cut for your vacation pay because it's at the new hourly rate. Sick time? Same thing.

So, that's a tale that many of you who left the corporate world to do your own thing can laugh about since you don't have to deal with that crap any more. And for those of you working on IM, but being ultra-lazy about it like me, remember that the next day may bring some financial bad news like it did for me today.

Anyway, hopefully now, I will have the motivation to finally work on my ebook idea (and hopefully it's a good subject, but who knows - I need to find a mentor/MM group) this weekend and get the thing out there! You all may see me on more often as I work on stuff more seriously, although I'm going to try to keep forum browsing/etc. under control as it can waste many hours per day under the guise of "work".

remember that the next day may bring some financial bad news like it did for me today.
In the past year, many thousands of employees had far worse news than you got today. A cut in pay is never good - but at least you have an option to keep your pay scale - and you have a job.

If it motivates you, it's all good.

This is true, but I'm in this crappy job due to getting laid-off from another job, so I've seen it all at this point.

I need to get serious with some way of making cash, whether it's IM or whatever! I'm tire of spending my life slaving for someone else's benefit...
