How Long Does It Take to Create Your Content?

My site is generating little traffic and no sales/few clicks at this point. Have 200+ posts on China related topics covering Chinese culture, history, people and places. Spend about 2-3 hours on average per article. Wondering if I need to spend more time on my content to make it better. Will this generate more traffic? Scratching my head on this. Any others will similar issues? How long does it take you to create your content for your site?

Also, wanted to point out that most of the content that I write comes from internet research: Wikipedia, other news articles that I find online. Wondering if I am just creating redundant content? Is this why people are not coming to my blog? Maybe it just takes a lot more time than I thought to build a steady stream of readers interested in the content I am writing.

    Where do I start?

First off, building a steady blog readership can often take months, even with good content.

Another thing, while the Chitika ads seem to be well targeted, the banners and image ads are not. For example, when I read an article about the port of Shanghai, the top banner advertised an email service and the block at the bottom had ladies' underwear.

The article itself may have been factual, and even pretty well written for what it was, but, no offense, it was boring. Unless I was a school child doing a report on the port, there was nothing there to interest me.

Doing a quick scan of a few other articles, I see the same thing. Recitations of facts with no personality.

People turn to sites like Wikipedia or official sources when they want facts and figures. When they come to blogs, they want more. They want to be educated, enlightened and mostly entertained.

Before you make any radical changes to the site itself, spend some time really answering this question:

Who are you creating this site for?

Travelers? Students? Potential expatriates from other countries? Who?

Once you have a target audience firmly in mind, turn your research skills to figuring out what kind of content they do respond to. Then provide that content with your own unique voice; let your personality shine through. You may not capture "everybody" but you will resonate with a certain number of them, and that will put you ahead of where you are now...

Appreciate the feedback. Good points, indeed. You are right on. Realize that my blog doesn't really have a unique voice or personality. That is what will draw readers in. I need to change this.

If I move away from dry facts about China and start saying incorporating humor into my posts, I am afraid that I might offend people and namely the Chinese government. My goal is to move to China to do some drop shipping, learn the language --- who knows what else.

Think that my target audience is going to be people that want to learn more about China in general. Realize that this is pretty broad but because China is in the news all of the time, think there will be a segment of the population that seeks to learn about China's culture, people, places, etc. But who wants dry facts, when they can get that from Wikipedia. They want to be entertained in the process. Time to spice things up with a little humor.

There is nothing wrong with offending a few people. If anythign it will actually bring more people to your site. No matter what content you create you wont be able to please everyone so by having controversial or humorous content you will bring in people who love your opinion AND hate it, but your traffic will go up.

It does take a while and consistency to bring in a large blog readership though.

Always remember that quality is greater than quantity. As you already have finished writing your own content, kindly read it if you think this content may be good enough to your readers. You just don't think about sticking to be that good, but the content should be better than ever. Try to take your time in writing content that is quite appealing to the readers.

It's entirely possible to have BOTH though.

If one does it right, you can have very lengthy content that can captivate an audience for a very long time.

Remember, there can be positive search engine implications to 1) keeping people on a page for longer, with high quality content and 2) humans naturally integrate elements of latent semantic indexing when you simply write, in detail, about a topic. You begin to naturally capture words that search engines link to other words and, as a result, place inherent value in your writing. This can further reinforce a brand, but, of course, it can also become a permanent source of high quality traffic.

Length (i.e. quantity) can be a double edged sword, though. You can have lengthy content that is of a very high quality, but, then, you can have lengthy content that is garbage. I do believe that search engines want to see originality, as well as, the meshing of other forms of media (pictures/video/etc). With that said, I generally like my content to be NO SHORTER than 1,000 words. One of my recent articles is over 7,000 words right now. For my intentions, that has worked out best for me. I know that other Warriors, in other threads, have indicated that they shoot for a similar word count.

Of course, content also can have a "purpose", tied into knowledge of an audience's needs and desires, which may make it more suitable for a lesser actual length. If your target market is 12 year old girls, chances are that they don't want to read a 1,000 word article about something. They'd likely would rather watch a video or read a much shorter article. It's all about knowing your audience, as well.

You've gotten some really good advice in here, and I hope you take it to heart. Just wanted to throw in a couple of things...

One, you don't *have* to be funny to have a voice. Your voice can be anything you want it to be. Sure, humor is a great way to entertain people, but it's not the *only* way. Start by picturing yourself having a conversation with ONE of your readers. If the two of you sat down for lunch and talked about these topics, how would you describe them? Probably very differently from the way you're writing about them!

Second, you've got to come up with better titles. You could be the greatest writer in the world, but without a compelling headline that makes people *want* to click on your posts, you're never going to have the success you want. For example, instead of titling your post "Panda Express", why not title it something like "Panda Express -- Bringing a Little Bit of China to the Western World"?

I have to head out shortly, but Nicole is right on the money about coming up with better titles/compelling headlines.

There's a difference between offending a few people and offending a few people with the power to either ban you from a country or put you in jail when you arrive.

I agree with Nicole. You don't need to be funny to be entertaining. For example, with the harbor article I mentioned earlier, instead of reciting facts, give people a taste of what it might be like to visit or even live there. Find someone who lives by (or even ON) the harbor and interview them about what day to day life is like.

What's the weather? The air quality? Is it crowded? What's the food like? This is the kind of thing people want to know about.

The question that you ask has little to do with the question in your title, but i'll bite!

Let me ask a few questions:

    What makes your site interesting?
Why would readers choose to buy from you, as opposed to another more reputable site?
Why would readers decide to look at your site in the first place?

Your site isn't news - news is presenting current and topical information.

All I see is a random listing of facts, most of which I could get from Wikipedia which I would trust more than a site called China Newz.

You're basically an online encyclopedia, and not a very thorough one at that.

I see a lot of people heading brainlessly to the idea of IM without a passion - and this site seems similar.

If you're going to write "newsy" type stuff, make it interesting, current, and opinionated. Do NOT just put recycled info on Chinese Checkers or Jackie Chan.

    Just my 2 cents

Think my site is interesting because it covers a variety of China topics. China is going to be the next superpower of the world and it will be essential for average Americans to know about it.

True the site is not really news and it may be a misnomer in calling it China Newz but really don't think the title of my blog will deter readers. Agree to some extent the content is a bit recycled but hope to add my own voice to some of the content now and try and spice it up. Check back in a month or so to see the change.

My site will hopefully give readers a single URL to come to and educate themselves about China. Whether it is travelers, business people, students interested in studying abroad or just someone interested in Chinese culture. The articles will serve as a teaser for China related products/services. Right now, am limited to what I can right about because my only source of material is via Google searches.

China related topics are my passion. I am a China junkie, so I feel that this is a topic I will be forever interested in. I have been to China for an extensive period of time and traveled to a handful of the cities.

Have been posting in China blogs, China forums, China social bookmarking sites, using Chime.in.

Want to connect with China travel sites so that they can post there ads on there. Also, hoping to go to China. Maybe travel around, find interesting products, like Chinese tea or porcelain and sell it through my site. Want to go all the way with the language. Will always be the foreigner that says silly things in bad Mandarin but that will lead to some good comedic material, make some people laugh.

      Appreciate your feedback.

Some very good points here. I would definitely recommend writing about china from your perspective as well. Your thoughts, why it interests you... everything you love and hate about it... You mentioned you plan to go and live there, it would be cool to do a video diary of your trip or even a dairy in your blog. You can even write about your plans before you go and what you plan to do there.

    John nailed it.

As far as how long to write content - it really depends what I'm writing. I can write something off the top of my head in just around 20 minutes or so.....but if what I am discussing takes research, it can take hours on hours to finish one post. I try to mix it up a little so there's some variety and to help ease the work of keeping a blog, while keeping it interesting for viewers.

Your educational approach makes sense but your content is generic. This places it in competition with the million other articles on "Jackie Chan, Martial Artist."

You could try a different angle. "Jackie Chan vs Yao Ming - Who Would Win?"

You could try a topical approach: "China Law Blog Instructs How to Avoid Copyright Fraud."

You could also mingle on a few key China forums and blogs. Peking Duck, Shanghai Expat, Beijing Expat, that sort of thing. Those sites are full of avid China readers and writers who will educate you about quality China content (for good and ill).

You might also tap into more Chinese social feeds and introduce a more immediate trending aspect. China is in the throes of transformation and a "China: Land of Contrasts" textbook is not gonna cut it in the blogosphere.

Lose the absolutisms. School's out, isn't it?

      Here's my first impressions:

I'm not sure if this is because of my script blocker, but I'm seening no "Read More" indicators at the bottom of the posts on your main page. It just looks like you're posting these insubstantial 1-2 paragraph blurbs. After I finally clicked on I saw you had longer articles on the pages. You might want to changes themes or add a plugin that will fix that.

To me, your content seems rather light and and fairly untimely. You don't seem to be trying to be a real news aggregater. If I was following China news I wouldn't subscribe to your site. China's a huge country that's producing a constant stream of very provocative news. I can't see attracting much attention with stuff like "Non Essential Rice Facts and Figures". You need to think more like an old time newspaper editor. What kind of articles and headlines will compel people to read it? Even better, what will keep people coming back? Your site's theme is awfully broad in scope. I would take some sharper focused aspect of the concept and concentrate my efforts more. You might not even narrow your subject, but just narrow the way you deliver it.

The best way to do this is to look very closely at your market and study them. See what they're getting now and how/where. Look for gaps you can fill in their needs.

I used to write short blog posts like you, but then I discovered that internet users like to read long articles and have more information, so I started getting more traffic and more RSS feed readers when I started writing articles around 1000 - 2000 words.

You should make a vast research before writing your articles. Stay far from Wikipedia. Look for more specific information.

I have studied and learned a lot offline for years and I know my topic. If you don't already have enough knowledge you have to make a big research, so that you may rewrite everything in an interesting way, by relating the information you will find.
