What is the best membership plugin?

Just out of curiosity, what is the best membership plugin or script out there, and which do you use?

Hi Robert, I assume that you are doing market research or something since you are a wishlist member certified developer and you have a membership websites course where you talk extensively about wishlist. I use wishlist and dap.

I am using s2member mostly, because at first I created my sites for fun and didn't expected to get revenue so I can buy an expensive membership plugin. Now that things get started to move I won't move because it has all the required functionality.

    Hi Robert,

It depends entirely on what you want to do with your membership site, how much you're willing to spend, and how much of a learning curve you're willing to endure.

I'd say for most applications, particularly in the IM world, DAP is the best choice. It's highly flexible, lightweight, integrates with just about everything, and - considering it's versatility - is learnable without too much stress (it's *very* well documented and the docs are written for the layperson not tech dorks).

Ravi and Veena (the developers) also keep up with development and provide excellent customer support. Contrast that with Wishlist, whose documentation is a mess, if it can be found at all.

A very cool new membership solution you might want to look at is MemberMouse. (well, it isn't new, but is just getting the exposure it deserves recently). It's very intuitive and user friendly. And has a very small learning curve considering its functionality. The developers of this solution are also on top of their game.

However, it's a monthly charge, whereas DAP and most other plugins are one-off fees. However, depending on your needs, it may be a wise investment.

Again, "best" really depends on what you want to do but these are the first two solutions I'd look at.

    Best,
    Vic

I use s2Member. You can get a free version of it through WordPress, but it has limited capabilities, or you can upgrade to the Pro version easily after you install the free version. Yes. it does cost around $129 non-recuring, but for a Membership plug-in of this quality it is more than reasonable. You can use it on an unlimited amount of your own websites and is extremely secure. There is a bit of a learning curve as with most of the membership site software, but the videos are easy to follow and it you spend a good day focusing on it you will have a super secure membership site that you will be very happy with.

I like Member Mouse. There's a monthly fee, but it's much more affordable if you're starting out on a budget.

Actually membership site is not a simple system to establish and run, I mean technically. I totally agree that the solution should be tailor made to your needs, but from my experience - you only know where you start with membership site, and if you not just copy your (or someone else ) business exactly, you hardly can plan where you end....
Keeping this in mind - I prefer for "start up adventures" - something free or low cost, and several months later - purchase the best fit tool.
Sometimes I use DLGuard, sometimes DAP but never tried wishlist ....

never used wishlist member and probably never will.

I was a fan of profit's theme, but they began spitting out new products instead of bringing profits theme up to speed.

Instamember looks promising, affiliate software built in that can do recurring, and the ability to spit out paypal buttons that can be used in either html/php or wordpress and the price is reasonable.

What would be nice to see is the paper template become responsive and some added membership abilities.

          Walter,
That explains a lot! I got Profits Theme myself, and was highly encouraged with how easy it seems to be to set up. However, I was very discouraged by the fact that the creator then immediately sent me a message offering another membership theme that's supposed to be "the best". (Esp. since that's what he said about Profits Theme...) What gives? A bit of buyer's remorse as a result. But, I told myself to just stick to it and then switch, upgrade, or branch out and try different membership platforms for different projects, in the future. Profits Theme IS easy to use, so far (excepting a day-long glitch that was my own fault: wondering why the pages weren't showing up, only to realize I'd had then set to draft and had not published them yet...D'oh!)

Robert: as to your question: I'd thought about Instamember, but at the time, the WF offer was closed and it was not available yet on their website. So I went with PF for one reason: Of the membership sites that I knew to be available at that time, that had the features I was looking for, it seemed to be the easiest to set up.

            LOL
Now, he has another one and claims its in beta, but wants to sell it to Profits Theme users for prices similar to Wishlist and Optimize Press.

Aside from getting people to buy something new I can't see the advantage of treating old customers that way.

Don't worry save your pennies Instamember will be back near the end of this month if I remember right the developers said either the 23rd or 27th. It will be out on clickbank I don't know what the price will be though.

I am Now Using rapid Residual pro for my membership sites and it is awesome.

I am really enjoying the features and Now that I have a handle on all it can do I am finding it a great way to run membership based product as well as run all of my software products that I sell individually.

I am now Using Rapid residual pro to handle my Affiliate sales, JV's and everything.

Its also NOTHING to do with wordpress which gives me a far greater feeling of security for my products.

Highly Recommended, Its Not cheap but its worth it.

Seems like a more useful question. Most people are going to list what they know - and most only know 1 or 2. Everyone is a proponent of his own religion.

I use s2member for the same reason many do: It's free. Though I'm about to pay for the pro version. I don't *need* it... I just want to support it. I've not had a single issue with it and have certainly made money off it.

If anything, s2member is sometimes overwhelming simply because it offers so much. Maybe another plugin as a simpler/cleaner back end.

I have the feeling that one of the reasons why s2member is not as popular is because for a long time they didn't have an affiliate program. When you do a google search for other WP membership plugins you see a lot of sites all discussing how good X or Y plugin is...but it's because they are affiliated with these companies. It gives the impression that the "crowd approves."

I also suspect that a lot of WF members here love/understand/like DAP mostly because it was first launched/heavily promoted here as a WSO (but correct me if I'm wrong).

Some cause-oriented hackers recently hacked one of my websites. So I researched what they're about and then donated a large sum of money to the entity they hate the most.

The next time they hack one of my websites I'm going to donate DOUBLE.

      From what I've heard, OP 2.0 is a white-label version of S2Member.

I've used a few others over the last couple of years but I am steadily becoming a huge fan of MemberSonic for how easy it is to set up & use and also because (I guess there's still a relatively small user base in comparison with others) we enjoy very responsive help for technical support and new development ideas.. We also have a nice tight knit user community who help one another and are able to have a direct input into the development roadmap.

I use DAP, actually creating my first product with it. Was surprised to see how easy it was.

Still haven't added the payment buttons I haven't gotten that far yet. Hopefully it will be as easy as setting up the product itself.

I've used DAP and a few others, but the one I find myself using on almost everything these days is FusionHQ Internet Business Platform

It can do many things such as run your own affiliate program. Integrate with Clickbank, DigiResults, WPlus and others. Can do stand alone products, includes cloud hosting and has an in-built autoresponder which you can mail using their cloud server or an SMTP provider.

And their support is top-notch. I've made a few suggestions and they were very helpful and did add some of the suggestions to the software right away.

    Cheers,
    Coby
