Using Craigslist to Promote A Blog? Viable?

Would using Craigslist to promote a blog be a viable marketing alternative? Do other Warriors have experience from doing so? If so would love to hear your feedback.

It all depends on the niche. A blog on motorcycles? Yes. A blog on WWII generals and their tactics? Nope.

Just wanted to update this thread by saying that I have successfully posted on CL travel services an advertisement for my blog. The posts last 45 days each and I was only able to list the post three times, so I did so in NYC, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Tried for a fourth city but it was limited to that. Just an FYI if anyone is interested in using Craigslist as a means to promote your blog.

  • China,

I have never done this but off the top of my head it seems like it would depend on what your goals are for this to be successful or not.

In general, people on craigslist are trying to buy things, sell things, get jobs or look for free stuff. They aren’t necessarily going there to find stuff to read.

With that being true, you could use your blog as a vehicle to promote something and then just have links to your blog in there. I’m not sure what your blog is about but if you can find a way to relate the content to something that people would be looking for on craigslist, you might have some success there.

If you are just posting a link with some information about what is in the post and there really isn’t any action for someone to perform, I doubt you will have much success.

    Best,

    Shawn

My blog is about Chinese culture, history, people and places. Hence, I posted an ad in the travel services section of Craigslist. If people are thinking about traveling to China, then they might want to check out my blog to learn about the aforementioned.

Are you concerned that others might mimic your idea now that you've put it out there for others to see? Or, do you think the additional blogs (on travel, etc) being advertised on Craigslist would be a good thing for diversity?

  • Interesting concept... I would think it would work well, but as the niche becomes more specific, it would lose impact due to the nature of Craigslist.

I have used CL for trying to get traffic to my site (offering services at the time) but was not very successful with it. Needless to say I've not been near it for a while!

Any niche will work. Cause whatever it is there is a section on Craigslist for it. You really need a craigslist posting service to do it though. One you have to keep the post alive and at top for a while to get the views and two you would get banned quick for over posting to do it right.

Craigslist works well for leads. However why don't you link your blog to social media and auto post your blog post?

Oh, turn your ad into an image by the way and everytime you post it then change the image name.

You still need a professional posting service though.

I started using CL recently for a new niche site I launched. It immediately started receiving no fewer than 100 visitors per day. It all depends on the niche and how you present it to the Craigslist crowd. Some people may "flag" your post even if it's legitimate, just because it contains a hyperlink to your site. Things can be somewhat subjective, but overall I've been successful despite the occasional flagging.

It's possible. You have to advertise in a tricky manner. Don't make it too obvious and you risk getting banned from CL

I always find it's best to soft sell and build a list with the prospects you get on Craigslist... It's rare to ever hard sell and have them convert on the spot.

I also have a guide for succesful craigslist useage:

I don't find craiglist that helpful, I tried using it to promote awhile back but not much success. I use yahoo answers now to promote and it works a lot better. I just find questions related to my blog and I try to briefly answer the question they have and leave them a link to the blog post that answers their question. This is a much a better way to promote cause the traffic so targeted. These are people looking for answers so they are more willing to convert whether you are selling a product or trying to get an opt in.

You think what really matters is whether or not your site/blog is relevant to it and how creative you are
