6 Years & 8 Figure$ Later, Here's What I've Learned... (5 Key Things)

It took me many years to learn the things I'm going to write here. In the 6+ years that I've been an internet marketer as my sole source of income, I've earned well into the 8 figures in revenue (8 figures = $10mm+).

Over the past 6 months I've done a lot of thinking about the most important factors that determine one's success online. These are the factors that have MOST contributed to my success too.

I want to share some of my key factors here for no reason other than to merely share them and hopefully help some of you.

I've had countless friends, family members and conference attendees ask for advice over the years and I've tried helping many of them. I'm sure you all have friends asking you to teach them to make money online. Most never do anything with your info; a few test things out; and even fewer make good money.

But through these experiences and my own successful campaigns and products, I've learned a lot.

Here is my personal advice to making a lot of money for yourself online:

1. It is very important to have a MENTOR. By mentor I do not mean an overpriced "coach" or expensive coaching program you purchase. That is absolutely not necessary. By mentor I just mean someone that is several years ahead of you in knowledge that can help you get at least one step closer to your goal.

A mentor can be - a knowledgeable account manager at the affiliate network you work with. A blogger who's blog you read that is willing to communicate with you via email, AIM or Skype to answer your questions. Someone you meet at a conference who has been doing things longer than you and has the same mentality and values toward their business that you do.

If you absolutely cannot find a mentor, then watch videos on YouTube by successful people that you wish were your mentors. This can be people like Jim Rohn, Warren Buffett, Eben Pagan, etc (more on this later). Do this every day while in your learning phase.

2. Reverse Engineer everything! Successful marketing campaigns are literally everywhere. Look online and find them. Seriously. Then thoroughly examine how the campaign works. Sign up for their offer, check out their backend, register for their email list, study their emails, find their traffic sources, reverse engineer their keywords... reverse engineer ALL of it and test it. You'll be amazed at how well this works.

3. Only learn marketing from the BEST. If you're into info-product marketing then spend most of your time studying the guys who have had the biggest launches. Guys like Frank Kern, Andy Jenkins and Eben Pagan. There are more but these are the first three that come to mind. They put out a ton of free information. Many people make the mistake of thinking that just because something is free there is no value in it. That couldn't be further from the truth.

You can learn everything you need from the free information the top marketers put out.

4. Test everything. I've run into so many people who say tell me they have been researching for years but can't make money online. When I dig deeper it comes out that that is all they have been doing - just researching. You must have a healthy balance of research AND testing.

Making the shift from researching TO testing is one that puts you outside your comfort zone. That's the point!

It will only feel uncomfortable for the first few days or weeks. Getting out and testing campaigns with your own money on the line is the only way you will functionally learn how to succeed.

5. Attend conferences. Whatever your category of making money online is, there are good conferences for you to attend. I have been going to a handful of conferences every year since 2008 and it has been the single best investment of my time that I have made. Not so much for the speakers but for the people you meet. You meet people just like you (always better if they are a little more advanced than you) and you form bonds where you keep in touch via chat or email. This really helps advance your knowledge and stay on top of new industry ideas. Your goal should be to have at least 5 people (who are at your level or higher) on your chat that you can talk about business to on any given day.

You don't have to attend expensive conferences. For example, if you are a CPA affiliate, then attend Affiliate Summit West and East (just buy the $100 hall pass). Attend Leadscon and Pubcon too. You can go to all those conferences with just a conference hall pass for not much money. It is well worth it, trust me.

I'll stop right here so I don't overwhelm you. These are seriously the top 5 concepts that have helped me make 8 figures online in the last 6 years.

If you do these things, stay persistent and actually work your a** off, you will make more money than you thought possible.

There is a saying that goes something like "I was an overnight success after 10 years." I don't remember who said it but it's so true. However, the beauty of the internet is that it doesn't even take 10 years.

You can be an overnight success after 6 - 12 months if you REALLY put everything you have into acquiring knowledge, testing and staying persistent. This time frame is conservative. I know smart guys who have truly applied themselves and began making A LOT of money in 1 - 3 months.

These are the actionable concepts I wanted to share for now. I don't want to answer too many questions but if you have any urgent questions you cannot find answers to anywhere else, feel free to ask them here.

Good luck guys!

    Awesome post!

How many times have we seen warriors come in here and WHINE about how IM is a scam when they have not taken action and have really tested anything.

I think of me being an IM'er these days as going to the trenches to test stuff.

I mean there is a time to do nothing, and sit on your arse doing nothing, but that gets you no where, SO I think this is the most important element to your post here.

The great thing about testing is that it can cost very little, and once you find something that works small scale you can ramp that up big time.

I love doing this with PPC, people think it takes big money to do well with PPC, but I normally do solid testing with small amounts of $$ and scale up my winners!!!

Once you start testing on solidified and proven info, then watch your results skyrocket!!!

Thank you for this well written post. I 100% agree that the fastest way to succeed in anything you want to do, if first find someone that has successfully done it before you, and copy what they have done.

If you want to make money online, find someone who is making 6-7 figures a year online, and learn how they went about doing this. Then you know you are headed in the right direction and not hoping that one day money will come pouring into your back accounts.

Thank you so much for this post. To many markets getting stuck on research and not getting any real results. If you find your niche you love being in, it truly becomes a pleasure to work, and naturally you will stay consistent and take action an a consistent basis. It is hard for someone starting out to get a mentor, just to expensive, so the advice you give is really priceless.

    Thank you.

Celente - Agreed. PPC is the single fastest way to make big money online. Of course it comes with more risk as you're spending more of your own money but as far as making money quickly and learning the most, PPC is best.

Here is how you "reverse engineer a keyword" - if you know the keyword you want to rank for then go to G and search for that keyword. Look at the top few sites and run them through Open Site Explorer to find their backlinks. Then go get the same backlinks they have plus more. This will show you a clear path of what's working in order to rank that keyword.

    Good advice hustle.

    If I might interject something...

Never forget what your own unique strengths are.

Some people are natural writers. Some people are good presenters. Some people are good in front of the camera. Others are great programmers.

    My advice?

Figure out what your strengths are.

    And then run with it.

    Exploit your strengths.

Be the best at what you do.

Very very true. I struggled for a bit trying to "be like" a guru and yet not doing what I am good at / what I enjoy.

As a result - I was "all over the place", I had no direction and ended up not going anywhere. LOL.

I agree with all points, expect perhaps #5.

I have never really attended summits, conferences, conventions etc until very recently because I thought that IM was mostly a "home" business. But the truth is that you can actually score some VERY valuable joint ventures and industry contacts at those types of events.

Maybe not necessarily when you're starting off, but as you progress on your IM career, those events can help you expand your business.

        1. It is very important to have a MENTOR. NO

But a mentor DOESN'T need an apprentice. Good chance you are getting set up to lose money. Little information in IM is permanent so real mentors are people that are in fields where the fundamentals don't change much. I can see a teacher being a mentor to another teacher or a doctor mentoring another doctor who is newer to the field.

        2. Reverse Engineer everything! YES

Everything can be reversed engineered if it's man made and it really is the best way to find out what works/what doesn't.

        3. Only learn marketing from the BEST. N/A (POINTLESS STATEMENT)

You don't choose the "best" because you don't know who that is. And, the "best" aren't going to find you because they are too busy making money online without you.

        4. Test everything. YES

Sure. Why not, it's not like you are really going to break anything hahaha.

        5. Attend conferences. NO

This is linked to that mentor crap.

Look, People who really generate income online DON'T need the rest of the infrastructure that goes along with traditional business. THAT'S one of the big bonuses of online marketing.

You don't need HR/Customer Service/a sales team/etc. It's costly in terms of money and time. Besides, if you need all that shit you obviously need customers right?

        WHY?

Because you can't make money online lol

Keep everything digital and learn SEO/SEM no matter which search engine you are using.

I like IM forums because there is good info that passes through here. There are also WAY more salesman here than real online marketers. keep that in mind on ANY public internet forum.

    Here's another useful tidbit.

Learn to differentiate what is true between and what is pure marketing fluff.

"Make $14,354.75 in one day in my under while pushing a single button - Rave reviews"

It's probably BS. If you set clear concise goals, you won't chase that BS either.

    Nice. Thanks for the read.

The reverse engineering thing is very important. Sometimes we tend to forget this and just go by what our head imagines.

It is very important to take a look around and see what's ALREADY working - look for trends, look for hooks, angles, cliffhangers, value provided and value conceived..

And, just like kinyash said: Action. Taking action is a must. It is better to take action on an imperfect project than waiting for your project to be perfect before taking action... trust me, that day NEVER comes.

I'd add one thing: Learn the power of a funnel.

Make your offers go in a path where you add up the value of the last offer and/or action taken.

Make your customer see what you're offering clearly. But, also, don't be a dick. Give him upgrades or tools that make life easier; that is, don't make your product missing a part and then sell it.

This post has gotten me thinking, man. Great stuff and highly appreciated

Love this tip, great reminder and great advice. Definitely want to remember this tip

And definitely live events help so much. When I first started my marketing business I attended a 3 day workshop. I didn't think I got anything out of it and nothing happened with it for months.
But later I got all these calls from people who had remembered me from the workshop and wanted work done, marketing, websites, consulting, etc. Out of everything that I had done for months with promoting my website - I did a spreadsheet to find out where my clients had all come from - and over 80% of the clients I got at that time were either people who attended that workshop or little meetups that I attended - or people who had REFERRED me to others from that workshop/meetups. That was really eye-opening for me.

I don't do it often enough.. actually barely leave the house at all, but can attest to it's effectiveness.

Very informative and encouraging. I've been dabbling for some time now and have finally had small break through with email marketing after finding a mentor. I was the research guy you talked about for longer than I should have been. Action, modeling, and persistence is what it takes. Thanks!

Cool, thanks! I like all of the tips. Maybe not the networking at events thing and I know that's a good thing but it's not for me. Maybe eventually I'll do it but for now I'm happy learning online

As far as point 1 is concerned, a mentor is good.
But, to find someone who is honest and, is there to help you when needed, is where the problem lies.

    Fantastic post!

Making money online takes time, a lot of time. A lot of people just aren't willing to put the time and effort in that it takes to become successful. Internet marketing takes a lot of hard work, but if you stick with it and put everything you've got into it you'll eventually become successful.

Hi, Thanks for the info. I have just joined WF and this is the first post I read, so encouraging after two years of learning and not earning a penny.

Time to implement, learn AND earn now.

Just one question though, I've just been on open site explorer, and bearing in mind I still consider myself a newbie, can somebody please explain how it can help me?

    Many thanks,
    The Doc

Thanks for the share! totally agree! it is so important to find a mentor and someone who has already done what you want to do.

If you're mentor is currently making $10k a month and you want to exceed that. Probably want to find a different mentor. or stick with them for a short time and once you feel like you've learned what you can move on. You are going to be the average of those people you hang out with most often. so if you're not satisfied with what's happening, find a different mentor, move on, and achieve your goals!

One of the better quotes that I've read. I will tell you that you really have to work it hard and not be so consumed with the information as you need to be with ACTION!

1-3 months is very realistic but you need to track your days and be sure that you are making progress every day.

So bottom line is, keep learning, learn some more and keep your mind open for even more information. This is what I like about this business. You learn the basics as you apply them.

My personal favorite is your second point - 2. Reverse Engineer everything!

No need to reinvent the wheel. 'Proven' strategies - list building, product creation, SEO etc. and PROVEN for a reason - they work. All that's needed is a bit of motivation and hard work.

    Cheers!

Thanks for the advice. I am not really sure why anyone would say you don't need a mentor. How are you supposed to learn anything when you don't have guidance? I guess you can do it from trial and error but I would think you would be saving a lot of time being instructed by someone that has already proven they have mastered it is what you want.
