Sub Directories or Sub Domains

My "personal" site is rather diverse in nature and since I have to rebuild it anyhow, I am breaking it apart into sections to more effectively monetize my existing traffic.

My question is not so much in regards to my clients and my readers as they are pretty much as diverse and dare I say, eclectic as I am ... so that is not the point.

However, while I ranked well for most of my targeted keywords before ... despite the amalgamation of defecation on my site. (Good mix of #%&^ or mixed up #%&^ ... take your choice) I know that I can rank substantially better if everything is broken down into their own subdivision with content solely regarding each particular aspect of my content.

However, what I do not know is whether I would be more likely to rank well with sub-domains on my site or simply keeping each separate installation in a separate, albeit relevant sub-directory.

Any ideas or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I'd trust that Yahoo knows the best way...

answers.yahoo.com, games.yahoo.com, mobile.yahoo.com, they seem to rank ok.

Yeah but they have a bit more content than my measly little couple of thousand pages LOL

If ever comes the day I can actually compete with them, I will be sure to let you know ... but it will probably be one of my assistants posting here then LOL

Besides, the name structure like that would not work with my site. The Eclictic Ward, then it breaks down into Eclectic ENTER SUBJECT Ward and so on and so forth. Another challenge I am facing is coordinating the different Joomla installations but like my actual marketing techniques, my only real option is to cowboy up and figure it out as I go ... but as for the site itself, before I begin uploading all of my content again, I was just wondering. I believe I could set up the sub-domains so they would fit, so it would be something like eclecticward/thepoliticalward which still is not the result I want, but ...

Google says they treat sub-domains and directories the same way. However sub-domains are usually used to separate content type sections and directories to separate categories of the same content type.

Thanks Tyrus. In that case, even though they are decidedly different, I will keep them in the directories as (I think ... and we all know how dangerous that can be LOL) it will be easier to integrate the different installations of Joomla in that way ... and IMHO should result in more search results for the top site ...

    Thanks
