How Do I Work With a Partner for Product Creation?

Hello everyone! This is my first post and I am still a newbie.
I'm looking for advice on how to work with a partner to create a product and market online.

I've been working with my Kung Fu Instructor (Sifu) to develop an internet marketing plan for his business. He would like to create instructional videos on how to learn Kung Fu online. I presented a marketing plan for him on building a list, sending videos of lessons to the list, and then selling a membership plan to a website which he will update and engage his online students weekly.

Sifu is very excited and wants to get to work right away. Great! My question is....what guidelines and expectations would you set up front before doing the work. Such as...

  • Who controls the email list, the product maker (Sifu) or the marketer (me)?
  • Who controls and administrates the Membership Website?
  • Would you charge a client like Sifu a fee up front or work on a percentage per sale type of deal?
  • When would you step away and let your client continue the work without you?
It would be simple if I could do it all myself, but he is the Kung Fu Master and has the content for the product.

Thanks in advance! -kungfudude

There's no 'hard and fast' rule for how to go about this, and suggestion from any member would be something just for you to consider.

You've got to know what you want to get out of your partnership before you do anything. This is so that you can avoid misunderstanding further down the line.

You also need to talk to your client to understand their expectations. They may want you to handle everything apart from the things you cannot do because it's the teaching bit.

At the end of the day, know what the client wants (in detail), how much they want to be involved and then determine what it's going to be worth to you now and in the future in terms of compensation for your input. That figure is something only you can decide.

If I was him, I would want control of the main functions, it is only fair it is his product not yours. Although you are helping.
There is plugins that do paypal rotation so you could share the profits that way.

The way I usually do it is I have control of the main list, the super unadvertised bonuses go to my partners list or just the regular bonuses.

Depending on who's doing most the work it is usually an even split.

I don't do most the work but I have contacts and other means to supplement for my work and I pay for quite a bit of extras.

I hope I answered some of your questions.

One more thing, you asked if you should charge upfront. Are you a partner or a webmaster, there is a big difference. Partners get percentages and webmasters get paid.

      Hey there!

I've been doing a lot of research since this original post but one thing that I am still confused about is the lists. Do you use two separate lists? One for your partner and one for yourself? How will this work if there is only 1 squeeze page?

I would like to use this future list to market products later on in the martial arts niche.

Also, what do you mean by "super unadvertised bonuses and regular bonuses"?

Thank you both for your insight! This definitely gives me alot to think about. I plan on creating a business plan and an agreement between me and Sifu. I'd much rather go the "partner" route and make sure the roles are very clear before I start working. Thanks again- this points me in the right direction.
