looking for free private email service

I have my own ISP provided email service as well as gmail and hotmail. But I'd like to know (and get) a good, solid and private (more or less) email service that's also free.

I tried Googling but I suspect many of the 'free' ones are merely data miners and unsecured.

Any recommendations?

    What I would do is find a good buddy that has a hosting account.

    Ask that buddy if it would be ok if you could host a domain.

    Buy a domain, have buddy host it and set up an email account for that domain.

    Not free, but about $10 for a domain and pending on your buddy.

        Yeah - if you have your own server already - that works too...just trying to save you money

    I'm not a techie and don't really know much about this stuff, but I suspect you'd need to get your own server or something if you really want 100% control. Yes?
